Change to Australian Design Rules (ADR) sees many models cancelled

More stringent rules for new cars in Australia are seeing a bunch of models being removed from the market. Apparently autonomous emergency braking (AEB) is now a requirement on all passenger vehicles. Cars like the Fiat 500 will no longer be imported.

The Emira doesn’t have AEB as far as I know… does it? It’s not something I’ve had to test out ;)

The chinese version has it so they can add it if they want. Not sure if that nukes the manual versions or not but they could sell something there if they want to.

I've read somewhere that the ADAS systems are tied to the ECU, which makes sense from a systems design point-of-view. It's my impression that it'd be on Lotus to develop the ADAS systems for the V6, which I suspect is very low down on the cost-benefit side of things because they haven't had to until now.

I'd guess that if the V6 was the only model they'd ever sell down under, they'd do it, but instead only i4s will be shipped moving forward.

Agree, but in Europe ADAS is now required on all new cars (not just new models). So I wonder whether that means the Emira V6 can't be sold in Europe any more?

UK has not yet signed up to GSR2, the European regulation, so I think they're only requiring ADAS on new models like the i4. Likewise, the USA does not require ADAS.

If Lotus wanted to move to the i4 power train for reasons (cheaper packaging cost, they've ordered tons of units, etc) then this could be a way for them to stick their hands up and say "oh no, we can't build any more V6s because of regulations" - as daft as this idea is. I remember hearing they've got a bunch of V6 engines hanging about waiting for installation.

The next V6 production run is allegedly slated for this year, it gives them time to implement/buy-in an ADAS system for the V6 until then. We'll find out in due course I guess!

It's true the US does not require this feature, but note that it WILL be required on all new cars starting in September 2029. Though with our current political chaos, any laws are subject to change on short notice.
