Doug Demuro Review

I just rewatched the video. He really nails The Who is it for take. For me, my dealer is 55 minutes away and could prove to be the best in the country in the next few years. They’re huge players in the exotic space so imo that makes it zero stress. The second thing is I like that the car is a bit more punk rock than the cayman. Didn’t think I cared about that but I think I do now.

The car is great and if you have a good dealer working with you makes a big difference.

Yeah I loved my drive but if feels forever ago. My son 2 is snowboarding in Jackson hole this week so he left his GTI with me vs leaving it at the airport. I’ve been driving it in anger this week, great car, tuned, fat clutch etc but the turbo 4 is kinda a mess, the same engine in my TT is kinda protected by the DSG. I’m slowly realizing that going turbo 4 for my next ten year daily will be a horrible mistake. So now I’m comparing the Emira v6 manual to the stupid expensive 4.0 718 and the c8, which you guys make fun of endlessly. The Emira is checking the boxes again and I need to hang in there.

Imagine going to cars and coffee, and then 20% of the vehicles ended being emiras. Everywhere you turn your head, another emira. Would you still take one home if you saw lots of emiras on the street? If so, then this car is truly for you!

I sure as hell don’t care if every car on my block is an emira. I still wanna take it to track and be prepared to fix whatever lose panels come off, weird electrical gremlins linger, and dealer bs saying it’s my fault…

Even tho their content is decent, Doug and Schmee both grate on my nerves a bit. Raiti’s reviews are a bit overdone. I really hope Savage Geese and Everyday Driver do reviews on the Emira. And then the boys from Straight Pipes for a grin, and Forrest’s Auto Reviews for the TLDR version.

For me it kind of depends on what I am in the mood for. Silly, track focus, in depth. Then I will pick the appropriate reviewer. However if a particular car comes out that I am really interested in I don't really care who the reviewer is. But a lot of times I will pick based on my mood.

Honestly I am wondering what will happen with car reviews when things go more EV. It just doesn't seem like it will be as interesting unless they are able to develop EVs with "driving character." I love tech in cars but that's not what brings me to reviews, the driving experience is what brings me. How many new cars are we looking forward to being reviewed now?

Doug has a bad take stating that if you can't afford Ferrari, Lambo , Mcclaren then this is a good alternative. I would never consider any of those as all are flappy paddle only.
I think this is something a ton of people miss when comparing the Emira to other cars. The field of what you call competitors shrinks dramatically if you confine it to new cars with a manual transmission. If you want something semi-exotic mid/rear engined and want to actually be able to order it how you want it.... the field shrinks immensely.
People are also saying the price shopping is narrow. I was naive to the fact that GT3's had become a "lifestyle" or scalper vehicle instead of a "car people" vehicle and tried to buy one only to get laughed out of the dealership. I had one spec'd out a little over double the price of an FE Emira and was ready to pull the trigger.
I've been intermittently tempted to break my own principals and pay one of the scalpers, but I just can't burn $50k-80k "mark up" on top of $180-200k MSRP and also not get the exact combo of options I would want.
If I could walk into a dealership and get a 296 with a manual for the current MSRP of a dual clutch model I'd go do it today.

Car & Driver magazine has been reviewing many EVs on paper. The "EV of the Year" article included quite a few, and they even tested actual range for every one. However, none were sportscars. The Porsche Taycan is priced way beyond what most people can afford. Among all the sedans and SUVs they tested, quietness is a major category - one that would be out of character for a sportscar unless the owner's primary acceptance criteria is how good the stereo system is.

I'd be very bored.........

But that's the thing though. If a car company makes an enthusiast car for fanaticals (i.e. irrational people following passion) you must appeal to enough people to say it's a "great" car. I think the Emira is a great car, a perfect car, for me and what I am looking for. Doug loved the engine and he said either the steering and/or handling was better than the Porsche. Even if it was slightly worse that would be fine with me. I like the idea of being a Lotus owner, call me irrational, call me Dark Verdant.
Ultimately, people take from these reviews what they pick and choose. I felt he was no where near as keen on it as he was on the Evora and all I am saying is, as a bit of an Anglofile, I expected more positivity from him, I thought he would love the car.
That doesn't mean you wont, and I hope you do! Its a very good option to a GTS..... its as simple as that, the rest is then down to each individual.
I am amazed there are 35 for sale in the EU and around 25 for sale in the UK already..... I wonder in 12 months how many used ones will be available in the USA?

I agree he was not gushing but honestly I think his review was curtailed because he really didn't have a lot of time with the car. But nevertheless, no gush.

I am just not in the world of car flipping or really even pay attention to that world. I am neither amazed nor unamazed by how many Emiras are for sale already. Why are you amazed at the numbers there are for sale?

I guess with the 2 year wait list.. you would think they would be snapped up...
u dont see so many spyders 718's, when they first came out for sale...
Or any other car, its a big %..... and they are not selling, but well, everything has its price of course

The world is a different place now to even the few years before COVID. Many people will only have a dim memory of the global financial crisis and what happened to sales of premium sports cars back then. Lotus will remember - it’s when they launched the Evora.

Yeah, it hints at a lack of must have awesomeness. Watch his gt4 video to see him be excited. I’m on pins and needles for geese jack and straight pipes reviews

I seem to remember you could get a very nice Ferrari 355 for 25k after the global financial crisis...

I was watching a youtube video about the genesis of the Lotus Elite in the 70s - the fuel crisis hit just before launch. It could almost have played into Lotus's hands, having produced a fuel efficient (in relative terms) 4-cylinder sports car compared to 6, 8 and 12 cylinder BMWs, Ferraris, Jags, Mercs and Porsches, however I think the whole market just went flat.

Lotus sold very few Evoras but most reviews say it's among the best handling cars in the world. Now it seems we are benchmarking that car continuously. Everybody tries to explain Lotus but it just doesn't seem like it can be put in traditional boxes. And that is my point, Lotus doesn't seem to fit in any of the existing car paradigms behaviors.

My strongest point is that the Emira story has only begun. We have I4's and track variants coming so what it is and what it is not won't be answered for a few years IMO.

I have little doubt that the 4 cylinder will be the best driving Emira once it is unleashed to 400 HP or more. I just want to have a manual one more time.
