Clearly there is a much greater concern here for human life than car deliveries, but posting as it is relevant.

Really horrible. Luckily some people have been resuced from the water.

This footage shows the ship losing electrical power repeatedly before the impact:

It doesn't look like the ship was under control. It's not even close to missing the bridge support. Sudden medical emergency of the pilot? Fell asleep? Don't these ships have collision warning systems in the pilot house?

It must have been horrid for the people on the bridge. Those that were facing the ship undoubtedly could see it was going to hit the support. Can you imagine being in your vehicle and seeing this coming and knowing there isn't a thing you can do about it?

My prayers are for the survivors and the families of the victims.

And of course, least of all in importance, cars on the way to Baltimore from England are going to be delayed. It's like Lotus is cursed.

Okay that second video shows a lot more. Explosion in the engine room? I wonder if this is a terrorist attack, something like what just happened in Russia.

Maryland authorities say it doesn't seem to be terrorism. We will see once more information becomes known.

I'm sure New York can receive cargo, but are there any other cargo ports Lotus could send cars to? They have ships on the way, so where would they be diverted to?

My son lives in Baltimore and commutes on that bridge every day. He messaged me early this AM to check in. This is going to snarl Baltimore for years. :(

Not that it’s important

Glad he is safe. I'm hoping you got the text before you saw the news. Prayers for everyone in Baltimore.

Absolutely glad that he is safe, I’m hearing news that they managed to rescue people from the water, which is tremendous. So frightening, my thoughts are with everyone in Baltimore who has been affected.

A shocking reminder of what an actual car nightmare looks looks like...

Praying for rescue!

It looks like there will be no incoming or outgoing ships through that harbor for awhile since that bridge is basically at the mouth of the industrial part of the harbor (bridge in crimson on the map)…

Offloading operations should still be feasible for ships that were already docked. There are other roads leading out of that inner harbor.

While it doesn’t feel right given the circumstances to focus on car deliveries, I couldn’t help but notice that one of the ships that we think had cars from the UK, docked at Baltimore and left the port at 1:15 AM this morning. The incident occurred at 1:30 AM and you can see that the vessel is stuck behind the location of the collapse.

Sincerely hoping the divers can rescue as many survivors as possible. That’s all that matters.

I think we can have a discussion about the bridge collapse as a tragedy, as well as how it will affect the surrounding area, economic impact, and how they can proceed forward.

I’m sure we’re all horrified if you tapped on that video.

To give everyone some transportation logistics context... Baltimore is the #1 busiest auto shipment port in the United States. It's #9 in total shipments but has auto shipments as a MUCH larger proportion of its volume than almost any other US port.

There are 4 major auto offload terminals in Baltimore. 3 of them are behind the bridge that is collapsed. The one that's outside the bridge (Sparrows Point) is the smallest. This is a big, big economic and trade problem. Diversion to other ports (Newark, NYC, Boston, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, etc) is going to create huge load on those ports.

FYI, most Lotus shipments thus far have come into the Dundalk Terminal.

The ships that have left the UK will need to go somewhere. Can’t imagine they’d still head to Baltimore

They'll be diverting EVERYTHING away from Baltimore for some time. Once the emergency phase is past, they'll have months of cleanup. The bridge debris is blocking the entire channel.
