đź““ Journals kitkat's Emira

This prefix is only usable in the Lotus Emira Journals forum.
The front has 1 additional locating hole which you do have to poke a small hole into using either a drill or screw driver, it has no backing plate but it stays in place with just a clip. It is completely optional, I just wanted it more secure -- everything else only requires the OEM push / screw pins.
Thanks! I was thinking about doing this mod, so I've been looking at my front liners and considering my options for the additional hole. I need to thumb through my push clip collection and see if I have something that flares enough on the back side of the liner to provide a solid hold.

It’s worth it, wish I had done mine earlier because now a bunch of PPF needs replacing.

3D Printed Rock Guards for the Emira

Just wanted to release a new design for the Emira. I had some TPU filament in 95A shore left over so I decided to design some rock / mud guards. This came about because after some fun on some back roads I noticed I have essentially destroyed the PPF behind the front wheels on the leading edge of the side sill, the rear fenders, and the PPF on the bottom of the rear bumper. These use mostly the stock hardware except for a couple optional extra locating holes for the front to use 3 push clips each instead of just the 2 factory ones.

How They Look

Printing Your Own
  • See Attached Emira Rock Guards.zip for:
    • The STEP file modules for your own slicer.
    • A 3MF for a full 4 plate setup inside of your favorite slicer with all of the slicing settings.
  • Tips on slicing:
    • Place them with the protruding nubs face up and turn on supports.
    • 7 wall loops and 15-25% rectilinear infill works fine for me.
  • Tips on filament selection:
    • I printed these in 95A shore TPU, this works very well, 85A shore will be too soft.
    • 68D shore TPU will likely work too but maybe you may need to modify the model to be 1.5mm instead of 2mm thick, more on that later.

Can You Print Them For Me?

Nope, sorry you're on your own there, find one of your 3D printing buddies and have them help you out. While the cost is low for me, I really don't want to be in the 3DP business. Expect to spend < $5 in TPU and 12 hours printing a full set of 4 rock guards.

Can I Modify The Design

Absolutely! The following is the OnShape models, you can modify any parameters you want here as well modify the underlying sketches and features if you so desire. I've made the commonly modified parameters as variables.

OnShape: Lotus Emira Rock Guard CAD Model

You can modify the models simply by:
  1. Create an OnShape free account.
  2. Copy the CAD model into your own account.
  3. Make the modifications you want, most people will just modify variables, the ones you're probably interested in are the "extension" variables. They drive how far the rock guard extends from your bodywork. Double click the variable to change and save it.

  4. Right Click the parts and export them to STEP or STL file to your slicer.
  5. Print your modified rock guards.
Great idea, thanks for the share of this design! I'm thinking though that they may need to be considerably wider than what you have in your photos to provide enough protection, and maybe closer to the tire width itself. (so thanks for providing the customization guidance). The appearance going wider may not be as obstrusive looking as that sounds. Case in point, the stock mud guards on my Z (sitting next to one of our forum member's Emira), I hardly notice that they are there, but have probably provided very good protection over the years.

I have a set of wheels coming and have been playing with designing some new center caps for it, in the mean time I was playing with creating some floating center caps as a 3d modeling thought experiment. I guess now they're turning into a reality. :ROFLMAO:

Awesome. Wondering whether you should quit your day job and finally become an official custom product Forum Sponsor - KKRP perhaps?

Hahaha, never happening. This is purely for fun, might ruin the fun if I do this for income.

It always does.. I remember 5 years into my photo / video journey (15 years ago) it became work and no longer fun.. but it's a good job and I love working for myself, even though it's stressful sometimes with where the next check is coming from. :)

Side note: Definitely see the blue tint in the Osmium Silver. Notice it compared to the white trailer and building in the background across the street...

There’s some truth in that.
And I haffta tell you that although most of what you do is way outside my wheelhouse, I really enjoy following your Journal (like lots of other stuff on this Forum).

I wished the 3D printed rock guards had come out sooner. I already have carbon fiber ones installed :(

These go over the felt carpet liner not under.
