3.5L engine removal process

Can anyone tell me if the 3.5L engine can be taken out from below, or do rear body panels need to come off to take it out the back and up? TIA

It's my understanding it needs to come out from above, and removing the body panels makes it much easier to access. I have yet to see it in a video, but that is what I have gleaned from reading shop manual excerpts and talking to my mechanic about a clutch job on an Evora (and reading forum posts about the access limitations from the subframe on the Emira being similar to the Evora).

Semi-related, this car at my local dealership needed a new transmission - Entire back taken apart

Why does it need a new transmission?
My situation was different from what Stephen described. Mine started with a kick-back that I felt in the shift knob as I'm driving away from a dead stop. Then it started slipping out of first gear as I lift off the throttle to get into second gear. If I start out in second gear, all the other gears seem fine and the car drives normally.

Yeah, it was certainly a shock to me. Only 2,500 miles. My Evora and Elise issues were usually small trim, and fit/finish kind of stuff. But this is pretty major.

I understand from Lotus USA that they have had “several” transmission replacements. Apparently, they’re sending them back intact to the manufacturer to see about recouping their warranty costs.

Manufacturer as in Aisin? I thought Lotus rebuilds the transmission to their own specs?
