It's definitely an interesting question of which cars automotive journalists should / do to pit against one another.
For example, in this test MotorTrend they compare the new Acura NSX Type S to the Porsche 911 GTS, and yet the 911
still comes out on top! (annoyingly

)
The NSX and 911 GTS might not be obvious foes, so we expected the unexpected—and still came away somewhat surprised.

I personally would never compare a 4 (5?) seater BMW M2 sedan against a 2 seater (or "4", whatever, you know what I mean) sports car like the Lotus Evora. I don't see what the two could possibly have in common, apart from their price, driving performance, and number of tires. The spirit of the two cars is just totally different:
By and large, a 2 seater sports car is a vehicle that you buy for the sheer joy of driving itself. It's not intended as a family car, or a grocery-getter (although some people enjoy using them that way, and more power to them!). A "sporty" 4 / 5 seater sedan is a "sensible" car for "grown-ups" who have obligations, a family, etc. That's how I view the two types of cars, anyways. I could never picture someone walking into a car dealership and saying "Hey there, I'd like to buy either a Lotus Evora, or a BMW M2". Not saying it could never happen, but I don't see those as interchangeable at all. They're both valid cars for their intended purposes, but they're not comparable IMO.
Maybe the
real problem is humans constantly trying to figure out what is the "best car", like somebody trying to figure out what is the "best instrument" in an orchestra.
