Dealer Demo cars in Europe and UK

Ok, here is my report:
POSITIVES:
- bonnet gap is not bad at all in real life. I’d say nobody would notice an unusual large gap if it’s like that. The overall gap is smaller (compared to some pre prod pics) and the rubber stripe sits lower
- floor mats are Emira branded and overall quality looked good
- apple car play worked without cable and the functionality and look/display quality of apple car play is really 1:1 comparable to e.g. BMWs latest version (Which is good!)
- Center display and cockpit display with high resolution, very sharp lines and good contrasts (car was inside though)
- infotainment functionality and logic is good with some really cool highlights: g force indicator, drive mode display - really cool features (you can see how the bars for powertrain, exhaust, stability go up and down depending on which mode is on…feels very Motorsport like)
- overall appearance and looks of the car are even better than pictures can show. Perfect proportions, shape etc
- KEF Audio First of all looks great and very big quality and also sound quality is good if you ask me (I’m not a specialist here, but I can compare it to H+K or Bose in BMWs or Porsche and I feel that the KEF is actually a bit better when it comes to surround sound - overall power output also good). The Emira is still a relatively small two seater and so the richness of sound is naturally limited.
- seat position definitely lower compared to prototype and seat quality and fit is good. The overall design of the seats is actually really spectacular with the lotus lettering and its overall shape

NEUTRAL:
- I didn’t drive, but I could start the engine. If started in normal mode, the car is not loud and that does not change even if you rev it (again, standing and in neutral) - exhaust sound changes significantly if you change it to sport (other exhaust setting -> 50% louder) and if u go to track mode revs are going up by 200 or so. Basically that’s a nice feature! But…I fear (preliminary opinion) that the ones coming from Exiges, Evoras (and loved it!) would say that this is just not loud/aggressive enough (changing that might not be a big issue and maybe it’s getting better/louder after a couple of thousand miles)
- Quality of Switches and buttons: the Interior quality just looks fine and so much better compared to what lotus built before (I’d say close to latest KIA quality). However, the buttons on the steering wheel are not really single buttons, but one continuous surface - that doesn’t feel/look good and I am also not sure about long term functionality

??? OR NEGATIVE:
- car needs to sit 5-8mm lower (FYI, sport suspension with cup2). That would just make the car look smoother and sportier. I have to add, fuel tank was empty, no one was sitting inside the car and it’s brand new, so that might change a bit, but it’s just a little bit too high to be perfect (Besides that, it really is from outside)
- car had not completed PDI, but some body parts (black painted exterior parts in the front e.g.) just felt a bit loose and you could really move them around a little bit. In addition to that, it seems that there are just some smaller inaccuracies (sometimes left part of xyz is higher than the identical part on the right etc.). Nothing too bad, but if compared to some other manufacturers…regarding the black body parts in the front and the back I am not sure how those will look and sit after 1-2 years. If you touch certain parts and look at some things in detail, overall quality impression is questionable here and there (but maybe that’s just me and it’s just the way how modern cars are built)

Any more specific questions? Let me know!

Oh and one more thing: the mesh insert below the gear stick is gone. It actually was a nice feature of pre production cars…

The reverse camera looks good. Good, clear picture. It would be nice if when you put your turn signal on, the reverse camera would momentarily turn on too. It has a wide enough picture to give you a good view of anyone close enough to be a problem if you were changing lanes.

Didn't the customer cars at the concours have the mesh cover? Since Lotus owns the demo cars, I wonder if there was an insurance issue with having the open mesh for the shifting mechanism.

I want to believe that they are just plastic covers to protect the mesh, and will be removed as part of the PDI routine. They look a bit too good to be throwaway protective covers, though...

Really disappointing about the gear linkage especially as still listed as an FE feature on website - lets hope it is country specific or just a cover which will be removed during PDI

Could it be a difference between the Demo/Dealer cars and the customer cars (or regional) ?

In Belgium:
  • Lotus Antwerp (3 customer cars) => with the mesh (link)
  • Lotus Ostend (Demo car) => without the mesh (link)

Maybe it's removable so you can either have it open or covered.

Thanks for the pictures and your detailed report/ opinion on the car.
Is this your car? Love the color. My spec exactly except for wheels I’m getting the diamond cut
No no, mine is magma red, DC wheels, black pack and Ice interior and yellow cal. - it’s coming my way mid of October (hopefully) :)

The hethel yellow black pack and black wheel combination looks really really great! Very sporty!

Love yours spec. I went back and forth on the red, but I already had a red 993 sold it in last year

The mesh / no mesh is very confusing? Could be a dealer demo thing, but then why put the F/E badge on the dash on the dealer Demo's?

To be honest it's one of the biggest design features for the Emira interior. Even if it's not noticeable while you are driving, it's something I appreciate seeing when cleaning the interior or ingress before driving. Not to mention the Lotus fiasco happening over at LOG41 thread... 1 Emira... while they were expecting an army. Talk about over promising and under delivering.

And to think, in interviews, Russell Carr made the mesh a big thing, so to have it covered makes no sense. What, Lotus over promising and under delivering. Surely not. Like telling me 2 years ago I would get my Emira in March. Now we are in September and still no car. Told October now but not holding my breath.

I'm sure the aftermarket will promptly find a solution for those interested.

So far mesh seems to be fitted to customer cars and the solid cover to dealer demos. Hopefully it'll become clearer as we see more demo and customer cars being delivered.
