Try this next time you're out:
Touring, manual...drive to like 50/60 and upshift to 6/7/8 so you're barely over 1500-ish rpms and lightly tip in throttle...barely. Is that pinging? or some...M139 light metallic sound we aren't used to yet? After the tank of gas that came with the car when I first heard it, my shop texted me that they noticed pinging too. So put in a tank of 100 and it seemed to go away. Just filled back with Cali 91 and that sound is back. Interested to read what you hear -

Do you mean 4/5/6 rather than 6/7/8? I was advised to be at circa 2k immediately after an upshift to avoid what’s been described as a rattling or lugging (there are posts on this topic), which resolved it for me.

I think he is referring to the I4 Emira, with the 8 gear auto Box. The comment about manually upshifting is also a clue(I think)

Got it, thanks. (My brain reflexively equates manual with the 6)
He could be having the same experience with the 8 that I had with the 6. I’d be interested to know.

it's pinging...might be a California 91 octane thing, I don't normally lug the engine at such low rpm's but good for people to know to avoid

Hello. Just a general ‘small displacement very high output turbo’ thing - never ever lug a high boost high output small displacement engine as it is more likely to pre-detonate and hurt the ring lands/pistons etc etc. my Civic Type R is OK/happy at 2200 rpm in top gear but no lower (2 liter 306 hp). My GR Corolla Morizo is OK at 2700 in top gear (1.6 liter 300 hp). The GR Corolla is especially sensitive to lugging and it’s no good to do so. I typically don’t let it go much below 3k in gears 4/5/6 ever.

100%! reason I posted is the most people will commute/daily in the Touring mode in automatic, and the programming will go as high a gear as possible and especially on the highway you'll be going 50-60 already in 7th gear and you can hear the engine pinging. Car is much happier near 3k at least...
