Steering Wheel Press-Type Buttons Now Available from GRP!

I installed the new buttons today. They really are much better. I'm actually going to start to use the voice control now that I can successfully access it. Much easier to turn the heated seats off/on with that.

Installed the new buttons today. Some steps that helped me:

  • Disconnect battery
  • The spring clips for the airbag - they push inwards towards the steering wheel center axis (not fore or aft relative to car body). I used a thicker punch tool to lightly push inwards. You can feel it acting like a spring when you make contact.
  • To disconnect the airbag connector, you push down gently on the top of the connector (I used a screwdriver), then the connector released very easily.
  • The piano black piece is removed from this really high density foam. It looks like you would need to undo clips but you don't. You just need to slowly pull around the circumference to release the features on the plastic from the foam.
  • Four 1.3mm hex screws are on the stock controls. Careful! One tried to strip on me.
  • Once those are removed, gently pry from between the controls/foam. There are 3 features that hold it in. 2 are on the inside edge of the buttons where there are holes in the plastic.

Finally got around to doing mine just now (bought the parts months ago!), and found your post afterwards :)

A good set of tips, especially on removing the piano black ring/surround piece - good to know I struggled with the clips for no reason  - but a small correction regarding the tiny screws: to get do not need to be removed, as they aren't holding the controls in.
