Top gear top 9 (worst) steering wheels

Well todays world is increasingly echo chamber driven. People seek out reinforcement of what they already believe and the ability to openly listen to opinions critical of their own and (gasp) even learn something from them is basically dead.

Online just makes such mob mentality even easier. If we want a valuable place to exchange ideas even on such mundane things as automobiles we must be willing to hear others with different thoughts which we might not agree at all, yes even critical ones.

For the most part that’s done well here and my comments are not addressed to anyone in particular.

I agree with the psychology of announcing a block and most people when they say they are going to do so don’t at least for awhile to see the responses.

It’s ok to say - I lost my temper and overreacted, I apologize. I’m fact it’s a sign of maturity

Cheers everyone.

And yes the Emira should have 450 HP 👺

What goes around, comes around? Or in this case, slightly hexagonal and eccentric. The steering wheel, not Eagle.

Seriously though, just eyeballing it (couldn't turn it at the roadshow obviously), it seems like you are actually rotating around the centre if you grip it at 9 and 3, so meh. I reckon it will be fine.

It's of course subjective wether you like the look of it or not, but do you really think that Lotus will mess up the steering wheel and make it rotate eccentric to a point that it feels strange? I doubt that.

If you want to see the Emira wheel in action, take a look at Harry's review video:

24m50s in...

You can see that the round Lotus logo is positioned a bit lower than the wheel's center point.

After watching the British GT race yesterday, and seeing the half-wheel being used by the drivers inside the car, I can't help but think the Emira wheel will be beneficial on the track. Less wheel motion and more leverage to turn. With the hydraulic steering, this should really be interesting. Can't wait to get this car.

I rewatched the TG and Catchpole previews and they were all grinning like kids in a candy shop while driving the car. I would imagine if the steering wheel felt awkward somebody would have said something, but they unanimously praised the handling and feel of the touring chassis. We'll see what the in-depth reviews are like, but so far so good.
I agree. And while I certainly understand the opposing view points for me I still really like the design of the Emira steering wheel. It's exactly what I was hoping for. Other people may not, but I genuinely love it.

You can see in these photos how the wheel does not steer evenly (and he not even cranked over all of the way).

Actually it looks like he does have the wheel cranked over all the way; that's the bottom of the steering wheel you see in the lower photo. He gets the back end loose a few times out there on the track.

The flat section is at the 10:30 o’clock position. If it were TDC you would have an even greater gap since the flat section will come into okay.

What was the last word supposed to be instead of "okay"?

In order for the flat bottom of the steering wheel to be in view like it is in his picture, the steering wheel has to be turned about 140 degrees, which is quite a bit for a car with a quick steering ratio like a Lotus. You'll also note that Henry hasn't changed his hand position from the top pic either. That looks like a quick tail-out steering correction maneuver. I don't know how far lock-to-lock is on the Emira, but 140 degrees over has to be pretty close.

The word was supposed to be “play”. My iPhone loves to change words on its own 😑.
