What other “raw” cars have you owned ?

Very jealous of the other air cooled 911s on here

Enjoyed my basic 3.2 Carrera until the head studs went :( . Something special about an air cooled porker . Would love a 993, but not paying silly prices at the mo.

Sold my 993 Targa right before this whole pandemic price craze started. Sold it for $5k more than I paid for it back in '06 and I put 95K miles on top of the 37K miles the first owner did. Loco!

Indeed, prices are seemingly crazy, and have been since around 2014 or so.

Old-school, air/oil-cooled 911s have so much character that the modern incarnations cannot match.

The ones that got away from me are the 2.7 RS Lightweight (still got the advert from 2003 listing one for £30k), but the one I really missed was the 964 RS 3.8 Clubsport (only a handful were built), listed for Euro 60K (in 2003) - missed it because I couldn't get rid of another car to raise the cash fast enough!

...so I settled for the 993RS, and then followed it up with the 964 RS Lightweight, by part-exchanging a 993 C4 (one of the last built) and paying the £1K price difference! Madness when you think about their prices today, but all of those cars deserve what they cost today since they are all phenomenal machines.

Always felt some of the Lotus cars offer a “raw” driving experience vs other marques. It’s defintely one of the characteristics I look for from a fun car.

So post up a pic and a bit of detail of any cars you’ve owned that you feel in to this category. I’ve had a few, so will drip feed them in starting with a British classic.

140bhp K Series Caterham with 6 speed box. You can thrash the car around country roads without risk of losing your license . Biggest bang for buck fun of any car owned for me. Every petrol head should own one at some point

@Balboa that is a beaut! Always fancied one but wasn’t sure if your upper torso sits quite pronounce from such a low bodywork. Didn’t want to look like Herman Munster when driving :D

What are they like to drive ?

I have decided to leave the fold, order cancelled and deposit on the way back to me. Having thought long and hard about it, I realised that the Emira was never going to be raw enough to be my fun car. It looks fantastic and as an everyday proposition it would be awesome, but for me I want a weekend toy that is properly involving to drive, and the Emira, in my opinion, is never going to offer me that.

So I have put down a deposit on a Jaguar D Type instead........

Wow, that's a different league!!

10-15 Emiras for a new D-type!!!

Mind blowing though!

😎🥂

I'm only 5.6" so fitting in it wasn't a problem. It honestly felt like riding a motorcycle in terms of handling, wind in your face and safety! Tuned ported and polished VW 4 put out 180HP and sounded amazing. Tube chassis and 4 wheel disk brakes. Gorgeous to look at. I put it in the La Jolla Concours and a reporter thought it was a real one and put a pic in the paper as such. Beautiful detail touches like the leather straps and Porsche badging. No creature comforts at all. Gorgeous Nardi wooden steering wheel but felt a little 'kit-car' like in that it might come off in your hand at any time. Only cost me $35K built and delivered so fun to drive and you got a lot of attention for the money. Wish I kept it - they've only gone up in value.

Absolutely lovely! (y)

Simple lines but very elegant...

22B tuned to 500 BHP 500NM torque needed an additional front Quaife plated front diff. I hope to resist the tuning bug.

Awesome car and love the plate. Silly prices now

I owned a Rage Buggy and driving was always fun!
It was the first one in Germany with an official license plate and it took me more than 6 months to get it road legal!
And anytime getting off the Buggy you got this amazing smile in your face …

First performance orientated car:

Final version ended up with 1.9 Mi16 on jenvey45s and Emerald ECU 180bhp 145lbft and sounded epic on and off throttle. Safety devices roll cage, big brakes from diesel 307, gaz suspension...

It was all way too raw for a daily driver and impractical for my lifestyle ambitions 😆 it eventually got sold for an Accord Type R which, once over the honeymoon period did not tick enough boxes.

After a few dreary years being a responsible family man I found my way into a mk7.5 golf GTI which reignited my passion for diving. I then upgraded to a mk4 Megane RS Trophy 300 (manual of course) which was a terrible car but a hell of a blast and occasionally terrifying thanks to rear wheel steer 😮
Currently daily driving a GR Yaris, which despite being a little stiff, is so easy to drive i find it lacks character until your driving 8+/10's.

First raw car I owned is Maserati GT Sport

Then sold it and got myself these 2 (my favourite 2 cars I ever drove)

Then had joined ownership with my brother on Aventador Roadster

Then both italians were sold and got these 2

Now Emira will replace the Cayman GTS, and Type 132 as daily, have 2 track focused cars on order coming next year will replace the F12/GT2RS.

@TRX250EX - wow, just wow. Truly an amazing series of cars. If you ever feel the need to adopt an otherwise financially independent adult, DM me :)

Fantastic selection of cars so far in this thread! Adding a couple below that haven't yet been covered but are "raw" - at least compared to most modern vehicles

Bought an FD3 RX7 when I moved to the states from the UK. Was definitely "Raw"

It was single turbo and street ported fire breathing monster, absolute blast - when it worked. Usual FD story apex seals ya da ya da. One of those that was great when it worked on the right day on the right road

Sold it and had more "sensible" cars until last year when changed things up.

My current garage queen is a 4C Spider. Definitely a marmite car but I absolutely adore it - will be a long-termer in the garage for sure, and I think a V6 Emira manual would be a really nice compliment to it!

And waiting eagerly for next year when my UKDM DC2 will be legal to import to the US to join my fleet. Absolutely adore this thing too - believe the hype, the way these tegs drive is just not found in modern cars anymore!

Owned my Ariel Atom for 7 years.
Can't really get more raw than this.
Drove it across country from Arkansas to Toronto Canada and then back across country to California.
Driving the Atom through the Redwood forest
Jay Leno.jpg
was surreal.
I must say that every drive was an adventure.
Met a lot of great Atom owners over the years.
