Pardon my ignorance in all matters welding but could this problem also be present on the I4 with it's aluminum subframe? Not sure if all these issues are specific to the steel process or could be equally replicated with aluminum.
No. Aluminum does not rust, however it can corrode. There are certain things such as acids that can break down and corrode aluminum.
Steel is harder than aluminum and is more of a practical applicant for some things, aluminum also has its value. Steel is 2.5x the weight of aluminum.
Aluminum is welding at a MUCH lower temp of around 1200 vice the steel at around 2500 degrees.
BUT. If its a shitty welder that's just had a few to many pints for lunch, its unavoidable.
Think this type of QC goes on at Lotus? It may but this is for a Bently. I know this isnt welding, but I was admiring Bentlys welding ability earlier and came across this photo.
