Emira art, take 3. Let's start by misquoting the late, great David Bowie...

Focussing on the rear tonight, this needs a layered treatment to get the desired effect:

2 x Basecoat to get colour blocked in
Colour blending of all light and shade - tricky on this one!
Application of the red/pink glow from tail lights over the top of the other layers.

First 2 layers done, it's the 3rd which will really bring it to life.

Shadow under the Emira blocked in, some highlights to add, same goes for the now legendary "Lower Black Pack"!

Evolution of the Wheel....

FINALLY, managed to carve off some time for painting and back in the groove at last, so it's been gratifying to see the front end come together with the completion of the front wheel.

The caliper was way too orange in the reference image so I've corrected that, and I am still having to work between two reference images as I drew it based on one but prefer the light and shade in the other.

Hey ho, if it was easy, it would be easy!

I'm completely blown away by the Goodyear details. Absolutely amazing work! 🎨

Is there any chance of some short video of you painting. I’d love to see how you actually do it.

First dibs on buying this work :)
Thank you for the interest! There is still pricing to sort for originals (and for the signed limited run prints) - I will add you to the list. Some senior Lotus guys have expressed interest in the originals so I am not ruling out some kind of auction.

Commissions will be opening up later in the year and I'll be contacting those who have expressed an interest about this directly.

I'll post a full update here soon - plans have been coming together in the background...

That's a great question and something I am more than happy to do if people are interested. I have some previous footage from painting the Lancia 037 but will start filming some short clips of work on the Emira tonight, and keep adding others.

I'll support these with some explanatory commentary and text on how and why I do certain things, why I work in a certain sequence, etc.

The rear wheel and tyre are quite a focal point so worthy of a few hours work.

Within the polished faces of the spokes there are whites, greys, warm tones and cool tones, basically reflecting what's around it.

The tyre is picking up light and also reflections from the bodywork. I also decided the sides of the caliper were too light as I'd referred to the wrong reference shot. Finally, the Lotus mongram on the wheel centre; at that size it is just a suggestion of the monogram and letterforms, anything more would require a brush with 3 hairs and a microscope!

She's still mean, but no longer roofless.

Some tricky work with surprising colours for a "black" roof tonight. In painting, nothing is ever quite the colour you expect and often when you paint it the colour you think it should be that's when it goes off the rails.

You have to learn to trust your eye and trust the process.

Yeah, that's one of the things about highly reflective dark colors, they tend to look like the environment they're reflecting. This is why I suspect Dark Verdant is going to be somewhat mesmerizing when it's in motion, and have an almost 3 dimensional look to it.

Basic colours and forms laid down in the glasshouse, highlights and detailing will really sharpen this up and make it pop. Nice by-product is how it is pulling the rest of it together, esch piece making more sense as the next is added.

Time to call it a night, as you can see there some different elements in here with the lights being on, I've been playing about with tinted matt varnish washes to get the desired effect, it's getting there.

Looking forward to adding L O T U S to the rear panel.

There is still some detailing to add to the side glass and B pillar, then it's diffuser time.

This is outstanding. Just amazing.

Also my wife has a degree in fine art (primary medium is oils), and she's super impressed with your work.

Fabulous work
I'm definitely interested in a Senaca print - add me to the list.
