I certainly didn't expect the Emira to be less than the sum of its 'new' parts
??? It was always not going to be an Exige or Emira. You actually pay more for the later versions of those.

We knew it was dialled down, heavier, softer and slower than the models that just preceded it.
People who still harp on about this, as one reviewer did, have completely missed the whole point of the Emia.

The car is the car. Pretty, drives like a Lotus of the past 20 years, very fast. But I must admit, while it’s not an Evora, apart from the aesthetics it carries over many of the characteristics - positive and negative - of the Evora/Exige/Elise platforms *but* actually seems to fall back in a number of areas when compared to the Evora.

The extra 200rpm would be useful, I think. I used to bounce of the limiter in my Exige a lot more in tour mode than sport. Same in my Elise. Adjusted driving style, but compared to every other car I’ve driven in the past 20 years, that has been a drawback of the platform. Never quite get to the crescendo…

However, that’s not a problem for me as I’ve gotten used to it. The problem has been the lack of clarity and expectations from Lotus. I should have stuck with the spec sheet and that would’ve set expectations perfectly!

But little comments from key sources suggested otherwise (under promising and over delivering).

Heck, even I knew the gear shift wasn’t going to be anywhere near Porsche level, let alone MX5! Despite comments on the previous March/April reviews saying it was going to be tweaked…again, expectation management. But for me, I love the mechanical nature of the gear shift in a Lotus. Character! But comments made seemed to indicate to me at least that they had made some progress here over previous cars. But not it seems.

The 400 v 416hp question is indeed just a number. 400 is far more than enough on the road. Any road. But, again, comments have been made about more power. Also, 400 isn’t just the previous level, it’s back to 2014/15!

Do we think the questions relating to the seating position is now resolved?

Pedal feel/location. Can’t recall any reviewer saying anything positive about them. Can’t recall that being said about the Evora. Although I maybe wrong.

Re the suspension/tyre combo. The reason for Evo having the setup they had now makes sense. And my concern re the Dunlops pre-date the Emira. A mate had a 718 Spyder on them and he thought they were absolute rubbish. Really spoiled the whole driving experience for him. And he is as big a Porsche fanboy as there is (for a 53 year old!). But he knows his apples. I just thought that Lotus wouldn’t allow that sort of experience. I may be proved wrong (per EVO) to the cost of one set of tyres and have to be more circumspect in my use of the car. And I may have to have the geo adjusted for different tyres?

Anyway, I still hope to collect mine very soon. I had toyed with the idea of a late Evora as as it is about the same price as a second hand Evora, but although it might not being as good a driving experience, the Emira is going to be a very good all rounder.
I think autotrader video was quite happy with pedal placement... unless my memory is going and thats possible. Harry was too happy he probably didnt even think about it :)

Rory was happy with pedal placement too, saying its perfect for heel-toe gear changes.

Give it a week in the Emira and all small perceived issues will have gone.
I am certainly not going to start worrying about the seats, pedals, view out, switchgear and pedal feel.

I take it people may know but Mr Catchpole has reviewed the car, it's the EVO road review which is him in the sports + GY setup.
He rates it, a couple of small niggles but nothng major

Not watched it yet - at work.

What were his thoughts on that suspension and tyre set up?
That is exactly my combo.

And mine ... it's in the mag not online. No issues with the setup. Same as all the others with mentioning the deliberate understeer which takes a bit of getting used to. I wonder if Lotus might do something about it

Having slept on everything from yesterday, today I realised all that matters is does it feel as if it will still meet MY expectations.

1. Will it feel to me like a modern day Esprit (007 car was a boyhood dream and test drove one in my 30s)
Answer = yes. Biased or not, Harry's remark that it is the Lotus he had always wanted made total sense to me. I could almost stop here. It's not about ease of turn in or gear change. It's a chance to own a great looking modern day Lotus.

2. Will it make me smile more than a Porsche (I am a serial Ducati buyer pre-Audi ownership, to me Porsche can be equated to Honda for being the best at engineering but sometimes a bit anodyne for those minded to make passion-based purchasing decisions)
Answer = yes. Most of the reviews said the Emira will be rewarding to drive when you have worked it out, it took me 10 years to click with a Ducati on track but the challenge was 100% enjoyable and makes the ownership experience special compared to jumping in/on something and drive/ride at 9 or 10/10ths.

3. Will I truly enjoy every drive be a bit of an occasion (toys should always make you smile in my opinion)
Answer = yes . I'm sure this is true of a Porsche too, if they float your boat, they just don't do it for me as outlined above.

I empathise with those that were expecting/hoping for 5 star reviews. I felt a bit delated at points yesterday. If you are still vexed today all I'd say is revisit why you really wanted one. If it ticks the boxes get ready to enjoy a great (if not class-leading car.) And if not, that's ok. Find something else that does and enjoy that instead.

"If you need an everyday accessory, take the Cayman; if you value lightness of being above all else, try the Alpine. But if you want weekend wheels with wow factor and an intricate, immersive, involving experience, then our initial encounters strongly suggest you should take a very close look at the Emira"
enough said..... I really wonder how many of the reviewers who put the 718 above it, even only slightly, would if given the chance, take a 718 over this, if they were to get it for free.... I am 89.5% confident everyone of them would take an Emira.

Exactly. Instead Harry had to call Gav to talk about suspension and Gav sent one of his development drivers over with a Touring spec car for him to drive. The C&M folks decided to take their press car over to the Alps for the weekend. EVO took a road-spec car to a track. CarWow did a 0-60 test despite being told not to - on the test track at Hethel!! Lotus seem to have had no control over who did what. It's amateur.

For the Evora press launch they took a bunch of cars to a hotel in Scotland, invited all the press there at the same time, gave them briefings on the car and recommended routes for test drives and photos. It's not hard to manage the press reviews.
Amateur moves. Makes me worried about the production line and all the newbies actually building our cars. Buying a first year model is never a smart choice and buying a first year model from Lotus.. in a new factory.. with new staff.. has got to be one of the riskiest decisions I've ever made. 🙃

I’ve been wondering about this and posted it a bit ago. Is there any empirical data that shows the “1st edition has bugs, wait” factor?

I’ve heard stories but those same “rates of issue” apply to almost all runs, 1st year, 2nd year, etc. as most vehicles since the Ford Taurus have at least some changes made to them…

Growing up I’ve hear it said many times “oh I’ll wait for the 3rd year so all the bugs are worked out…”

Wondering your view vs. the data vs. the feeling about it…

No review from Shmee150 yet. Strange as he is usually one of the very first to release a review.

I don't think you'll notice 16hp especially as the torque is the same as the 416.
430 would have been nice for the fe, we know both engine and transmission can do it. I expect a software remap could do it
Top line is the one

Flashes for the supercharged 2GR are rediculosuly expensive. Komotech charges nearly $2k for an airbox and reflash that produces +20HP and 11ft/lb TQ. 😂😂😂

That's a joke right? A simple stage 1 flash from numerous VAG tuners costs around $600 and bumps various VW and Audi vehicles +100HP/90TQ with zero hiccups or reliability issues. Yes, I realize it's easier to tune power out of turbo vehicles, but I'm simply talking horsepower per dollar.

This is the main reason I'm so disappointed Lotus detuned the Emira to 400HP. Those extra 16-50 ponies are EXPENSIVE! and would have been free for them to use the same tune they used previously, but they want to play games and hope we're excited for future versions that will be even more outdated in terms of power when they finally release an Emira R or GT with the 430-450HP we all wanted AND DESERVED to begin with.

Actually, no we didn't. We were told definitively that it would lap quicker than the outgoing Evora.
