I'm a bit slow here, just watched the EVO review. Looks like he just didn't like it. Oh well. I did find it interesting that the said he would look forward to the M139 and described it as "revs like a lunatic". I'm not so sure about that since the M139 has a redline of about 7200RPMS, not that much higher than the V6. The DCT will address Jethro's complaints about the transmission, of course. I get his point about the benefit of a smooth operating gearbox, and the need to mentally manage things if it doesn't operate perfectly smoothly.

I think he will just mean the flywheel has been lightened. Lotus have no doubt tweaked the gearbox and engine mapping as well. Who knows maybe they have extended the redline also...

And actually Jethro says the engine note to a spectator at Anglesey would think its an F8 Tributo on the noise front - so much for the boring V6....

I don't really see what's boring about it. I suppose because it's older and doesn't rev very high? It's supercharged, reasonably powerful, reliable (fairly easy and cheap to fix too!), and probably the best sounding V6 I've ever heard in any production vehicle!

On a few forums (OK Pistonheads) some are saying Henry's review was lukewarm at best, well I've just read his review in EVO and thought otherwise.. He gave it plenty of praise.

That's what I thought. He's not a shouty journo

I also never understood why some people have a problem with this engine being old and stuff. Haven't they realized that the last 10-15 years of engine development where rather about making them more fuel efficient, producing less CO2, NOx, etc. and making them quieter to meet the law?
Of course those are great achievements (except from the thing with the sound), but not top priorities for a sports car. I'm very sure that the Emira will feel more powerful than the GTS 4.0 being roughly the same weight and having more low and mid end torque combined with shorter gear ratios. And to my taste at least the Evora sounds better than the 718 GTS as well. So what's wrong with the 2GR?

Would love to have $30k to blow on the car and have the engine built with new valvetrain and stronger rods & pistons, then a reinforced transmission. Make it have 500 hp and an 8k redline! Would be a sweet sound 😎

You’d take the 2GR over the GTS 4.0 flat 6?

I'll be honest.... I was obsessed with the GT4, until I drove one on the street. It's a fantastic track car and fun when pushed to the limits. It's just not that exciting on the street. Tall gears, power all up high, and that goofy bolted on wing. Few heads even turn while driving one. It's still a fun car, but the the Emira is exotic and beautiful and has a better interior (+1 for Android Auto support!).

Both engines sound fantastic. Just like my STI with the turbo flat 4. That rumble was so much fun.... but the Emira's supercharged V6 is really something else!

If I have to pay for it, then yes. Why not? It sounds better to me, has more low end torque, is cheaper to maintain, and less threatened to failure in the first place, because 8.000+ RPM come at a price (when we talk about high mileage which most of those cars will never see of course).
Surely the Porsche engine is the more modern and more efficient one, but what exactly does that help me?

Meant to add - Do we not think Harris will go the same way as the Evo review? I am not looking forward to it as I won't expect anything decent from him, in this case, with those same cars in those same set-ups.

I is about perception.
If you to sit in the Emira, on a track, and expect it to be a GT4 then you will nearly always come away disappointed. The Emira is a ROAD CAR with some track capability and will be bloody excellent on track for people like me, who have bugger all track experience. Who cares if a souper up Ford Escort track set-up overtakes me.

Those, like me, who expected the car to be a dialled down Evora with more comfort and amazing looks will be highly delighted.
Cant disagree and cars are built for:
road use
road and track use
track and very limited road use

Evo's sin is to compare a compromised road and track car with a track car and pass it off as a fair appraisal. Not close to an apples to apples comparison. I do take the Evo review onboard and dial its value to me back by 20%.
