I'll be honest.... I was obsessed with the GT4, until I drove one on the street. It's a fantastic track car and fun when pushed to the limits. It's just not that exciting on the street. Tall gears, power all up high, and that goofy bolted on wing. Few heads even turn while driving one. It's still a fun car, but the the Emira is exotic and beautiful and has a better interior (+1 for Android Auto support!).

Both engines sound fantastic. Just like my STI with the turbo flat 4. That rumble was so much fun.... but the Emira's supercharged V6 is really something else!
That's the gearbox though...and looks don't really play into a choice between engines (not comparing the cars). Most NA engines don't have a ton of low down torque (some exotic counter examples of course) and I thought that was the purist / enthusiast ideal.

If I have to pay for it, then yes. Why not? It sounds better to me, has more low end torque, is cheaper to maintain, and less threatened to failure in the first place, because 8.000+ RPM come at a price (when we talk about high mileage which most of those cars will never see of course).
Surely the Porsche engine is the more modern and more efficient one, but what exactly does that help me?
I think when we start speaking about maintenance and failure we get into hypotheticals, let's leave that out for now. I'm not sure what the numbers on the Evora are compared to the variations of the 4 litre flat 6 but I haven't seen any numbers to suggest they're any less reliable.

Interesting you'd choose the Toyota engine, I think I can confidently say you're in the minority. I'd pick the GTS 4.0 drivetrain (with PDK) in a heartbeat.

That's what I thought. He's not a shouty journo
where is his evo review? I can see the evo website and its someone else that reviews the emira **** stars, its not catchpole.. what am I missing, where is it please? and I dont even like him that much, but would like to read it

Does this mean we should not expect a Carfection review? And what about Chris Harris, will it be part of Top Gear or separate video?

It's in the latest EVO magazine.

Why does every review say it comes with Android Auto? I thought the system used Android Automotive (a much different and full-integration beast)…?

@digilotus, you might know more here.

It's both.

Android Automotive is the operating system and the foundation of the whole system. It contains an app called Android Auto which provides the screen mirroring from your phone (same as Apple CarPlay).

The general public knows what the latter is, but doesn't know (and could care less) about the distinction from the former.

This was painfully obvious to anyone who actually understood how the business works, you baulked at the suggestion of budgets being the reason for compromises in the car (the engine, transmission and chassis being clear examples)

The electric models are based on a different platform to the Emira. I very much doubt there will be any carry over as you've suggested.
When did I "baulk" at budget being a factor?

You doubt because you want to, and because you seem to have this need to tamp down and/or outright dismiss most anything I say. The carry over is from the design studio; Russell Carr and his team, the same ones who designed the Evija. You can be sure they're paying attention to, and learning from the reaction to the Emira, which they also designed. Much of that is also being used by the engineering department who work together with the design department. Those tools, technologies and the experience they've gained with them will of course carry over. That should be painfully obvious to anyone who actually understands how design and development works. (See? I can do that too. Really comes across as warm and endearing, doesn't it.).

All the tools and technology including 3D printing and the 3D AR visualization that was used to design the Emira, will be carried over and used for their future vehicle designs. I don't think they were using or even had any of that for the Evora. It's all part of the new Lotus and the investment from Geely that's given them the budget to bring in all this new stuff. This is a good thing and will add (already is) a new level of quality, fit and finish, in addition to refining performance through more advanced engineering capabilities.

3000 mile road trip! That must have been great!
Catchpole feels the headlights do a good job:
“The last few miles are done in darkness and it’s a relief to find that Lotus hasn’t skimped on the headlights. I’ve driven plenty of otherwise fun cars that appear to have been given budget bulbs to light the way at night. But the Emira’s are easy to use, quick to respond and bright enough to make driving in the dark enjoyable. Another tick in a box.”

I've heard different things on Lotus being VERY quick to note vehicles as exempt from factory warranty coverage when mods are discovered by the factory... naturally any tunes, or major upgrades would have that outcome, but for the Evora owners out there... does Lotus have any issue with a cat delete?
No issues with my Evora 3rd cat delete. My dealer did the work and there's no impact on warranty. I did have to declare it as "exhaust system modification" to my insurer.

I still have the cat in case I need to return it to stock but it's been off the car for 10 years and they're worth about £400-500 at the moment.

Was the difference just in sound, or did it improve the performance too?

Sound. It now sounds like the later model Evora 400 with the valved exhaust in "valve open" mode.

The quality isn't great, but you get a rough idea from this windows-down tunnel run. There are average speed cameras covering the tunnel so a full-bore run isn't possible. Bear in mind too this is a 2011 Evora S, not a more recent 410/GT which has a louder stock exhaust.

@TomE that's coming up as "This video is private" for me

Sorry, forgot that was set as private - should work now.

I'm honestly kind of shocked by how many people here are so turned off by these journalists' critical reviews....like, to the point of wanting to cancel your reservations. All sourced from a couple of YouTube videos. Seriously?!

None of us have driven the car. I'd prefer to make my own judgement after driving the car as opposed to relying on something said by some person I don't know.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but none of these reviews thus far have been given by professional racing drivers - - just guys who know how to speak / write eloquently and who happen to have the opportunity to do that about cars for a living.

Until I hear a professional driver pick the vehicle apart, I'm content to withhold jumping to conclusions.

Will this be the best sports car ever/for the money/Lotus has ever made? Perhaps not - - but it's not going to be a dud, either. If you want a pure driver's car that makes no exceptions, go buy a Caterham 7 and a bottle of Tylenol. If you want the refined-to-sterility "king", get your dental license and buy the elongated-Beetle, err, Porsche Caymen/911/I can't tell them apart.

Everyone take your fingers off the trigger and just breathe. It will be alright and this will be a great driver's car.
