Test Video
The aim of this test was to evaluate the Lotus Emira equipped with the AMG M139 engine in its completely stock form, particularly to see how well it performs compared to its claimed output of 360hp. Additionally, it was an opportunity to gauge the consistency of the power delivery.
Test Results and Observations
Across three runs, the measured wheel horsepower was remarkably consistent, peaking at 334hp at 6650rpm. The maximum torque measured was 37.87kg-m at 2900rpm. For a stock vehicle, this is an impressive showing. Considering drivetrain losses are typically in the range of 15-20%, the engine’s actual output is likely in the ballpark of 380-400hp, which is higher than the conservative 360hp figure quoted by the manufacturer.
The owner of the performance shop also noted that AMG engines are often conservatively rated, and this test result aligns with that reputation. Lotus has clearly optimised the M139 engine for the Emira, ensuring not just powerful performance but also excellent stability and consistency in its output.
0-100 km/h Acceleration Test
To further evaluate its performance, I conducted a 0-100 km/h acceleration test. Using the Launch Control mode, the Emira clocked a best time of 4.3 seconds, which matches the factory-claimed figure. However, as the tyres were not fully up to temperature, there was slight wheel hop during the launch. With optimal tyre conditions and a warmer surface, I believe the car has the potential to achieve closer to 4 seconds flat.
Conclusion and Verdict
The Lotus Emira 2.0T is undoubtedly a finely balanced machine that delivers both performance and driving enjoyment. In its stock form, the AMG M139 engine provides strong, consistent output, with wheel horsepower and torque figures that are highly competitive. Combined with Lotus's legendary chassis tuning, the driving experience is truly exhilarating.
What sets the Emira apart is not just its outright power but its poise. Whether accelerating in a straight line, carving through corners, or cruising at high speeds, the car feels planted and inspires confidence. For enthusiasts, it’s a machine that brings the concept of "man and machine as one" to life. For the average driver, it offers an engaging yet approachable experience.
Should there be an opportunity to explore performance upgrades in the future, I have no doubt this engine holds untapped potential, which is an exciting prospect for enthusiasts.
