The end is near (end of the V6)

In the Netherlands the taxes added to V6 FE Emira amount 100% - pollution tax = 50k EUR, VAT = 20k (21%), total about 70k EUR extra in taxes. Initially i4 would be a lot - as in a LOT - cheaper because of reduced emissions, but final outcome is somehow disappointing, its still not very 'clean' - which results in still high pollution tax added. Half of V6, but still substantial, combined with the VAT.

V6 FE = 160k EUR
i4 = 120k EUR.

I honestly wish we had taxes like this in Canada.

There are a lot of armchair experts, even ones with bylines in magazines.

The emissions rating of an engine isn't fundamental to it. It's a result of an entire system of emissions controls that are external to the engine. The choices that manufactures make to achieve a particular emissions result are largely based on cost.

Just because Toyota is no longer using the particular engine in their own vehicles doesn't mean it's incapable of being packaged in a way meets the emissions target, it just means that Toyota has chosen other directions for their own drivetrain engineering in their passenger cars, in their case mostly hybrid.

If Lotus wanted to meet new and more stringent emissions controls using the 2GR-FE, I have no doubt they could hit the targets with some mix of catalytic converters and other external controls. I was shocked by how low the real world emissions test results were for the Emira V6 in the certification testing documents submitted to EPA, particularly compared to the same engine as delivered in the Evora just a few years prior.

V6 production is ending no matter what as Toyota will be closing the production line so even if Lotus have a buffer on engine stock, it will not last beyond 2026 or sooner (this is from someone that visited the factory and asked). All this mean is that the AMG M139 version will stay in production until whatever hybrid product is ready for market. In an ideal world, with the lengthen life of the AMG platform,. Lotus will develop a manual transmission for it but we all know that will not happen. So if you want a manual, best to get one in the next year or so.

Well this (Toyota no more produces the engine) is another and different problem and has been discussed a lot too.

I am pretty confident the V6 hits the new european e6 emission regulations so there will be 2025/2026 V6 manual cars.

What I am not sure is, if the upcoming faster Emira models (S / R / GT or whatever they will call it) will come with a uppowered V6 engine. To be honest, if the FE and Base V6 will remain the only V6 cars, I will be quiet happy, as then I dont have to spend an unreasonable amount of money on the upcoming faster versions.

I'm not sure that's correct. The 400hp variant as sold in the US is WELL below the emissions limits according to the testing results for EPA. They have a large amount of headroom to work with.

But not EU or CARB standard coming up and the point is moot as Toyota is shutting down the production line and Lotus is not going to produce a new variant of just a few hundred units

We've argued about this elsewhere, so I'm not getting back into it with you. But I will say that there are more ways to make engines than in a "production line", and Toyota still currently makes engines in batches for customer orders that haven't been produced in volume for their own cars since the 1980s. So I'll leave it at that.
