Sales have not been as Lotus had hoped. The SE version is about to launch and it must make production ‘slightly’ easier, to deal with one engine and gearbox rather than two engines and three boxes. I anticipate the V6 ending soon.

I think we all can agree that a faster version of the Emira is on the horizon. What will it be exactly? Few know. However I have my ideas.

In the short term (12-24 months) I think Lotus will announce an Emira R with a hotter tune and some minor hardware upgrades. Due to the fact that the 400hp tune already has a lot of heat that has to be managed, I think Lotus will limit this version to 475hp, perhaps only 440hp initially. While more power is definitely possible the accompanying heat would require significant re-engineering. With light weight seats, exhaust, wheels, and battery this model will weigh around 3,100lbs.

While this model is being rolled out Lotus will also be putting the finishing touches on the Emira Hybrid. This will be a hybrid in the spirit of the Porsche 911 hybrid. An electric motor between the engine and transmission to provide torque fill and quick boosts of power with batteries positioned above the gas tank behind the seats. It is not designed for extended, battery only travel. There will be aero, brake, and suspension upgrades too, of course. Perhaps even a roof scoop (a la Exige) to dump a lot of cool air into the engine compartment. Even with the same weight reduction hardware from the Emira R, weight will go up to around 3,400 lbs, but with 450hp from the ICE and another 150hp from the electric motors this would be Lotus' fastest car ever.

Which one would you take?

I think the hybrid version would give torque off the line, allowing for a higher-end tune at the top end. As the car goes faster there is less requirement to cool the car but at low speeds cooling is an issue.

Don't agree. That's certainly true for the new EV vehicles, but Emira has far outsold Lotus's wildest dreams when they launched the car.

They were blown away by the order book that built in the first 6-12 months, and the factory is still clearing it with i4 deliveries. And that's despite them doing everything possible to try and screw up the success of the car.

Despite the strong sales, I think the emira projections were even higher and the factory / management was just not ready to fulfill the aspired volume. They definitely missed out on buyers that moved on and will not come back for another 3 years. Sales are already slowing in mature markets like the UK where there are cars on lots.

Don’t think that’s correct. They wanted to make 5000 per year, at least initially. Car went on sale end of 22. The UK market is choked with barely used cars, many of which were sold by Lotus in bulk, to non franchised dealers. As such, residuals have taken quite a hit with one year old cars being retailed at close to £30k under list price. The global economy likely hasn’t helped. The SE hasn’t landed yet and they are still making First Edition cars. Soon three years after launch there are no base models available, no new options, no carbon parts via factory and no real momentum behind the car. Behind the scenes Lotus seem in turmoil. They have dumped their agency sales model and pissed off their dealer network enormously.
