Action Cam Mount via tow hook

The picture shows the New ZL1 Addons tow hook mount from www.gregsraceparts.com

It depends on your camera type. I just received mine today, for a GoPro 13 camera, which has a different set-up:



For those interested and in case it’s helpful:

1. You need long nose pliers to pull the “plug” blocking the threads for the tow hook (photos below shows the “plug” on right, recessed behind the bumper, and what it looks like removed).




2. The tow hook threads in, COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. Once tightened, mine was straight (parallel to ground). Those unlucky enough to tighten crooked, I suspect received a defective one with improper threads and should return it (?).

3. I used a 3/8” hex bit or Allen socket, to remove the OEM ZL1 tow hook bolt.

4. To replace it with the bolt from the camera mount kit, you re-use the 2 OEM white plastic washers.

5. For a GoPro camera mount kit, before inserting the new bolt, you put the bracket the camera attaches to, on first. Then you put the small silver sleeve from the kit, to sandwich the bracket between the sleeve and bolt head. Then install with same 3/8” socket. Putting a cloth on the ratchet handle is a good idea, to avoid scraping body paint with the ratchet.



6. My camera mount when level, touched the bumper. So I installed it at an angle to leave a gap, then angled the camera up, until it was level. The camera mount adjustment nut, was 11 mm (7/16”).



Now I’ll carry long-nose pliers as part of my stock “car tool kit”, should I ever need to use the tow hook (the OEM trunk kit includes a regular tow hook). For my “track kit”, I’ll take the ZR1 tow hook, camera and mount kit, a 3/8” rachet, 3/8” Allen socket, and 11 mm wrench.

Finally got to an acceptable level. Shaved off maybe 0.38mm. Sort of wish I left it at 0.37mm, but good enough.
