Curious: if one was to order a plate in advance, what do you do if a car isn’t here for another year? I did that once after being told I don’t have to mate the plates to a car, only to pick it up at DMV and was told it needed to be registered with a car within 30-60 days. I’m also in California.

AAA has different policy. I didn't have to mate those to a car until they come in. Try AAA
