is Emira a SuperCar?

I do agree the GTR is a snooze fest. I bought one new and it was fun for 3 months and a beast at the track but I got bored with it quickly. It is the car that made me swear off flappy paddles for life! Manual or nothing for me. So I would take the Emira over almost all exotics.

Just to start a fight:

The V6 manual is an old timey super car.

The 4 Cylinder-auto is a sports car.

The Lotus Emira is NOT a super carā€¦ but it is as beautiful as a super car, and the designers should get tons of awards for bringing it to life in a way that didnā€™t compromise its looks or driving characteristics, while still making it relatively affordable.

I agree with the comment above. More HP would probably justify a super car label here, but then it would cost much more than it does, and not nearly as many people could afford having one.

One of the characteristics that sets a super car apart is itā€™s just out of reach (on the attainability scale) for most working people. The fact that a lot of well to do buyers that actually DO own super cars are buying up these Emiras, at the very least says this little car is held in high regard with people that absolutely know the differences.

Shmee has other VERY nice options at his disposal and he has still used his Emira as his daily.

Having just picked mine up and driven it 500miles. I have to say it is on a different level than any of our Porscheā€™s.
You definitely feel itā€™s an exotic car. One of my neighborā€™s son who is studies mechanical engineering at UT. Stated ā€œ my Camry doesnā€™t look like your new super car, itā€™s beautiful, the frame is bonded aluminum right? ā€œ Then he asked about all itā€™s specifications.
Itā€™s hard to comprehend, but it really is seen as a very special thing. A disruption in the automotive space.
Enjoy the experience.. I have seen this car become part of some really special car collections.. The Emira is an anomaly, something truly Exotic that defies categorizationā€¦
Thanks to all itā€™s creators for making it a reality for us fortunate to enjoy!

i think my plan is to call it a "supercar" when talking to non-car people and use the term "exotic sports car" when talking to car people.

then depending on the context with the non-car people ill specify a little more about how its on the border.

I've settled on "Retro Super Car". It meets all the requirements in my mind of a 15-20 year old Super Car that you can buy brand new today.

No

My GT4 is not a supercar, either.

My 458 is a supercar. If you drove all three of them back to back, you would quickly understand the differences.

If I drove them all back to back, I'd probably piss myself with joy, and think they were all great fun šŸ˜

I appreciate you have a contemporary to directly compare it to, but I do still get on board with the description "Old Timey Supercar". I personally concede it doesn't meet the modern bar for the description, but it definitely gets me grinning like I've managed to get hold of something I posted on my bedroom wall twenty-something years ago!

It's all about the personal experience a car brings, not the informal classification. Every car I have owned provided something unique (except for the 1987 Buick Skyhawk, that thing was a total POS).

"Something unique" describes most of the cars I've owned up until now (casting them in a charitable light, and applying appropriate levels of sarcasm) :)

"Something special" is where I'm hoping the Emira pans out to be...

Jokes aside, once the US market modifies these things, they'll be beast.

Regardless of classification, if I'm hosting a supercar event, Emiras and 458s are in.
The Cayman is getting bounced at the door.
