Finally got my car back from getting full PPF. GVE in Uxbridge had it for over a month. I was not impressed by the time taken plus they reported work needed on bird lime and a scratch which were not on the car when I dropped it off. Not helped by the car being there for weeks.

They end result is good though and they worked hard to try to get the paint into shape. Some quotes from what they told me about the paint below - I think this reinforces that Lotus have real problems with their paint process and (unfortunately for me) I suspect DV is the worst colour from this perspective.

Comments on my Emira’s paint; “your car’s paintwork was inspected by one of my detailers using a variation of lighting and a report was compiled with the following advisories highlighted:. Excessive Swirl Marks on the majority of all exterior painted panels. Excessive hologram marks on bonnet, rear wings and boot lid from previous poorly finished detailing work.”

And “Due to the nature of these defects we had to result to a 2 stage detail to remove these defects which we were very surprised to see on such a new and low milage high end vehicle. This involved a slightly harsher cut on the panels using a rotor to remove the hologram marks that were as a result of poor workmanship prior to the delivery of your vehicle. We do understand that not all cars leave the factory in perfect condition and this is why we offer a 1 stage detail as standard with our PPF packages. However considering this is such a new car with only 400 miles or so on the clock, we would not expect this kind of additional remedial work to have needed to have taken place under these circumstances, especially considering we have detailed a few examples of new Emiras so far and none of which had needed a 2 stage.”

This has cost me an extra £500 which Lotus have said they will refund me.

Total bill for the full Xpel PPF, Halo ceramic, interior protection, glass protection and wheels/brake caliper protection was £5300 (not including the extra 2 stage detail).

Unfortunately, the car will have to go back to GVE as there is a defect under the PPF In a very obvious place on the bonnet (looks like a new stone chip - again wasn’t there when car dropped off) for the bonnet to be redone.

A few photos attached.

One thing I would recommend based on my experience is to drop the car at the detainers clean and do a thorough video walk around of the car and it’s paint condition at drop off. Then make sure the car’s condition and any defects are noted, signed off and you keep a copy.

I would not have hoped/expected this would be needed when have detailing done a place that does Bugattis and Paganis but I think it is prudent in case of issues later. Plus get a firm timescale. I was initially too relaxed and that led to the car being pushed down the list and then spending far too long parked outside !

I may be wrong (often am), but it seems that taking a car to someone who specialises in making money from detailing and asking them if you need to spend money having the paint corrected is only going to lead to one answer.

Sure... but when every professional detailer has similar comments, then you have to consider there might something going on with Lotus' paint process. Every single detailer who I've reached out to after seeing their Emira detail/PPF work posted have all said the paint is extremely soft. One went as far to say that it felt "tacky" and "like it was still wet." I've chatted with 7 or 8 of those who posted YouTube videos or Instagram posts and they've all confirmed the poor quality paint. One said "Lotus is aware of the issue and it's been since resolved".... so take that as you will.

More like Lotus is aware of the issue and it will never be solved.

Interestingly my detailed didn’t report the “tacky/almost wet” issue. They were much more concerned with swirls and holograms introduced by sun standard paint finishing in the factory.

I don’t agree with you in this instance. If that were the case every Emira they had done would have had the extra detailing to make more money. That isn’t the case plus this extra preparation takes a lot of time and I think they would make more money doing more high margin PPF jobs than spending more time on prep. I think this was legitimate and needed due to poor paint finishing at Hethel probably due to a rushed job or poor training etc. Not helped that DV is the hardest colour (as the darkest) and shows scratches and swirls the most. I am glad I got the PPF done. It’s expensive but the car will be a lot easier to keep swirl free than with the bare factory paint.

Anyone done or planning to do matte ppf on their hethel yellow emira?
I have been considering doing full Xpel Stealth PPF on my Hethel Yellow / full black pack Emira when I get it. I'm on the fence though. I would love to see one done before committing to it, but that may not be possible. I've always quite liked the frozen/stealth look on other cars when I see it.

When I got my PPF the guys found several places where the paint was uneven (mostly on the inside of the hood creases, edge of rear spoiler etc). Honestly if not for them sending photos I might not have noticed.

They told me they found similar issues in 90% of the non-German exotics they worked on, and that they've come to expect it in any car from a small/smallish company.

They touched up a few places and now the paint looks perfect though.

I was notified that the patterns for the black parts before and after the rear wheels are not in the XPEL DAP database. What are you folks doing for these 2 parts?
  • The rear part is going to get a beating anyway (basically the same as a mud flap on normal cars) resulting in the film tearing, so might not be worth PPF-ing.
  • The front part is a difficult shape, so probably expensive to do...

I've got to imagine most people are doing them custom, anyone worth your business to is going to be able to PPF them.

I'd also imagine that any XPEL shop would considering using something like their MPD (11 mils thick) or Ultimate Plus 10 (10 mils thick) in very high wear areas -- these films are going to offer more protection over their other films that are in the 8 mil thicknesses.

It's also worth considering that the pieces are small enough to physically remove and either dip in something, or spray coat off the car. Hand applied PPF seems like a lot of unnecessary work.

I was thinking along the same lines, but also including the option of just replacing them with new parts after 10 years or so.

Porsche is just as bad its not a Lotus thing but that price is insane (unless it was full body ppf?)

Next time try this chap work is impeccable and will be a good few £k less.

This is some work he did for me and note the comments about that Porsche paint…

That was with dealer under strict instructions not to wash it (they didn’t) and driven straight to him …

Wow, I can't believe you got Porsche GB to pay for some of the paint repair work!

I confirm PPF works as intended!

Emira picked a fight with the bike in the garage last week (Emira won). Just need to have the damaged film replaced, but the PPF/wrap shop is fully booked until late January. Maybe I should stick the shop sticker or an XPEL sticker on the damaged film to showcase the successful test and perhaps qualify for a discount?

Anyone have any experience with Eurocar in Orange County wrt PPF/Ceramic and paint correction. Do they do their own work, sub it out? Feedback on their level of experience/quality? Otherwise, any recommendations for reputable shops nearby?
