The watches thread

Not really in to watches, but tried to order one for the wife this week, needed in 2024. It seems it’s more selective than car buying, politely had the door slammed in my face, seems the only way riffraff like me can buy one is by paying three times list price on the grey market, which I will never do. Looking forward to the next year and what it may bring to these arrogant bastards

try these guys, not sure if they ship to UK - had a couple friends use them and worked out well. It is grey market. They have a store in NYC.

I'm assuming that was Rolex?
You just have to make a little effort. Contact them and book an appointment. Get on the waiting list. Visit the store a bit, build a rapport. Make sure they know its for a special occasion/present for someone you really love! And eventually you will get your watch. Ladies ones especially.
Agree the BS is grating, but if u play the game so its fun for you then when you fo finally get the watch it will be worth the wait

Which watch were you after? They’re usually less stuck up with ladies’ watches, unless you’re after the likes of a 7118 or 77450.

Nice. Should be able to get one next year, if things keep trending down as they are.

I was offered a 116503 (traditionally low demand model) a few weeks back with no prior history and <1yr wait, so things are definitely looking up for the average joe.

That’s encouraging, thanks for your time, and I think you may be right.
I’ve been offered an appointment at one authorised dealer, but they have said that model will not be offered to me.
like you say, the times they are a changing

But like Leonard above me has mentioned, you’ll have to make an effort to call in and get your name on the list.

The physical presence makes a difference when it comes to how an AD decides to allocate their watches - ie someone they know is a real person will be preferred over someone who just called or emailed (assuming similar spend history).

Inspired by another thread and being -so- close to going off topic (in the "how to moderate the moderators thread" ... 🤪😇), I thought its a good idea to keep this topic active.

Picked this up today. Stunning value for money and such a nice watch. An entry level drug that I'll recommend to everybody who wants to tap their toes into this silly addiction.

Sinn 104 on a leather strap.

Yes!!! That is lovely 😍 Good strap option as well. New or second hand?

I think I need another Sinn. Going to start looking now... 😅

So many nice pieces out there for not a lot of money! In fact I've just remembered a Japanese start up owes me this. A little different I know, but thought be a bit spicy in the summer ☀️ Sub 500 English smakaroonies

@Leonard really cool watch as well! Is it a Zelos? Don't think so but it reminds me of a watch I nearly bought from them. If it's not a Zelos don't look them up if this one on your post is up your alley 😅🙈 Stunning colour as well!

I bought the Sinn new, the 2nd hand prices are very close to what you buy them new for. Sinn also doesn't really do discounts but I got a nice bottle of wine with it. Bought it at a small shop here in my hometown. Which also has Grand Seiko... (Spring Drive GMT 🤯), so the Sinn was the reasonable way out.

Supporting local business... that's what I tell myself as well 😂 Lovely model though and look great on many straps and that's a lot of cheap fun in itself! 😁

Not a Zelos but will take a look 🤦🤑😅 thank you... 😛
Seems like I'm supporting start ups in Japan as well lol

I've seen a really nice blue faced quartz Grand Seiko diver that is really nice 👀

Anyone still buying luxury watches? On the list for a Rolex Daytona and GMT but thinking of only one. Seems like people have slowed down the purchases of luxury timepieces.

I think it's definitely slowing 🐌
I doubt anyone is turning down good Rolexs though!
Pics when you get them and any other faves you may have 🙂

These are my favorites. The Omega has been with me all over the world (45 countries) and the Rolex is for special occasions or to wear around locally. Definitely wouldn’t turn down a Daytona, and perhaps GMT.

Nice like those a lot, lot to be said for a travel companion and a watch for best only.
I got the Explorer for travel, really wanted to get some proper use from it, but even though its an entry level Rolex I must admit it still feels a bit bling to be wearing everywhere....

I feel you. I would like a GMT to travel with- very useful to keep track of different time zones as I now rely on watch and phone to do so. But truth be told, not sure if it’s a good idea traveling with a $12K watch, even if it’s insured.

My fiancee has purchased this for me off of my dad who never wore it ahead of our wedding in May. I’ve always been interested in watches but never taken the dive (pardon the pun). I already can see this is equally as dangerous as getting into cars… i completely get it now. Just read through the thread and you all have really cool watches!

I am a complete watch novice. I’ve been to get the strap resized today and realised this is the 46mm. I had tried the 42mm on in the shop previously. I have a thin wrist and I’m wondering if it’s actually too big or if it’s just personal preference thing? I compared the 42mm and the 46mm in the shop today and the 46mm just felt a lot more substantial and almost like I was missing out on something if I changed to the smaller one. Can anyone offer some watch advice please? Is this too big on my wrist or if I like it that size that’s all that matters?
