Dashcam for the Emira

anyone else worried a dashcam would actually hurt their case cuz they might have been driving like a hooligan...

Now that some of you are taking delivery, can you confirm the usb outlet made its way to the rearview mirror?

I’m looking for a discrete camera that works with this setup, any recommendations?

For reference, I considered the escort 360c radar detector + camera, but that’s a pretty bulky (and pricey) setup.

No Emira yet but I got the Garmin 67 that was recommended by others. It’s got a magnetic clip and is smaller than I expected (about the diameter of a golf ball)), and has a 30 min battery for parking. No radar stuff…

I just ordered Viofo a229 pro 3 channel 4k system today. I saw that it had good reviews and kept coming back as a recommended option plus the price is not bad for a 2 camera system. I’ll let yall know how it works when I set it up ( hopefully soon, I should get my car next week end)

Never admit you have a dashcam. If someone notices, just say it hasn't been working lately. Wait until you have had a chance to review footage yourself, and only then bring it out if it supports your case.

Also, it is a good idea to turn off the feature that overlays your speed on the footage. Even if you are in an accident that is not your fault, they will look for ways to pin it on you. If the footage shows you were speeding, they will say the speed was a factor even if it wasn't.

I really like BlackVue, super sleek compact design

Amazon product
I have BlackVue cams in a couple of my cars. Today, my wife was in an accident (while driving my M3 :(). 100% not her fault - guy (without a license or proof of insurance) pulled out of a gas station, crossed 3 lanes, and drove right into the side of her as she was heading straight down the road.

But when I got the camera home and pulled the footage, the only two files on the entire SD card that were corrupt were the front and rear 'event' recordings of the accident. The footage before and after the accident are all fine.

We shouldn't need the footage - it's pretty obvious what happened. But I am so pissed at BlackVue right now. What is the !@$%$ point of a dashcam when the footage you actually need isn't there but everything else is .

This is exactly the same one I want except I'm going for the 2 channel instead of the 3. Let us know how easy (or not) it was to install and set up. After watching the reviews, the A229 Pro had a noticeably better image, especially at night.

Yes that’s what I read about the image quality as well. I think I read somewhere that the usb outlet on the rear view mirrors of the emira is not always powered so it sounds like I would have to do a hardwire even for the front camera which is a bummer as I was looking forward to a quick and easy install without a cable showing for the cam but it sounds like it will be more of a pain to install 🤷🏻‍♂️

After a few months of use, I can confirm that the Viofo A139 Pro I put in the family car (as mentioned earlier in this thread) is doing great, and provides excellent clarity both in daylight and at night 👍

Will definitely go with another Viofo for the Emira.

Sorry to hear about that! Hope she's 100% and that the M3 gets well sorted out.

An unfortunate reminder that us being sober, responsible and on good tires can't stop the other guy....

Yea, I also have a VIOFO. Looks like cheap Chinese street market junk but it actually works really well.

What’s the install like on a dash cam? Does it drain battery or does it cut out when the car is off? I’ve never gotten a dash cam on a lotus given how sensitive they are to battery drain

I run the Escort and yes it's a bit bigger, but if you run a detector you don't have 2 different units to deal with. It has very high resolution and records forever on a 128gb card. It's a 12v unit, but I bought a voltage converter so I can use the USB mirror port.. I tried the converter out on another car and it works fine.

I am looking at the same Escort as well, but noticed the mirror is 5v and the Escort is 12v. Which converter are you using? And did you find a small cable as well?

I bought this one. I had heard it might not work on the Escort 360c because of the amperage loss during conversion. But I got one and plugged it into a usb on another vehicle and it works just fine.

Does anyone know what the options are without hard mounting?

Will from Boosted Media who’s got an Emira and on this forum was the one who originally posted recommending the Garmin working well with the rear view connection giving a 30 min parking capacity. Hadn’t heard the rear view doesn’t always provide power, is there any reason why that would be?

I’ve never used a dash cam before so am I missing any reason why the Garmin isn’t sufficient? Personally I don’t plan on parking my Emira anywhere other than indoors at home, inside a gated golf club, and perhaps an odd occasion in a friends driveway or rarely to quickly pop in a store (I don’t plan on using the Emira for shopping trips or going out to dinner leaving it in parking lots). So my needs may not be the same as others in terms of lengthy monitoring while parked.

Here's a nice review comparing the Viofo A229 PRO against the Blackvue DR970X, including mounting:

I recently got a sponsorship from BlackVue and they sent me their newest 4K cams to test. Just installed them today and posted some on my Instagram story if anyone is interested. I got the DR970X Plus 2-channel kit with their B-130X battery for parking mode. Install was super easy. I only did a quick test drive to make sure everything was working, but so far so good! Now I just gotta figure out how to utilize the rear facing cam with my carbon louvers. 😂

I can confirm that the power to the USB port on the mirror mount is ignition switch-controlled…..
