DIY: Floating Console Modification

Got a center console bottom tray from an automatic and modified it so the shifter assembly fits through it. I also replaced the bolts with SS hex ones. I think now the entire floating console mod looks a bit more OEM

Where did you order the tray? part number?
Looks very good.
Did you just have to drill holes for the shifter or did shorten the tray?

Part number is 889073113511B.

No, you have to cut an opening in the tray and the rubber liner in the shape of the black spacer the shifter sits on top of.

You also have to cut a slit at the back of the tray so the shifter “arm” fits through it.

The automatic tray uses the same 3 bolts up front and 2 more at the back. Rivnuts are already pre installed in the chassis so you’ll need 2x 20mm M6x1.0 bolts.

The bolts for the shifter base are 25mm M6x1.0

You also have to cut a slit at the back of the tray so the shifter “arm” fits through it.

I made an insert for mine covered in tan leather to match my interior. Also made one in black leather. I think I like your solution better.
Also thinking of wrapping the 3D printed insert that replaces the shift boot in tan leather to give a bit more contrast.

Just wondering if you made one, not asking you to take it apart. To clarify; you

1. unbolt shifter unit from chassis so you can lift it up
2. put the plastic tray in and guesstimate where to make the cut-out
3. take out the plastic tray, use the template to mark where to cut
4. cut
5. install plastic tray, secure with screws
6. insert rubber mat under shifter unit
7. mark holes to cut for the bolts
8. take out rubber mat and cut holes big enough that the shifter unit will not pinch the rubber when re-fastened
9. install rubber mat
10. fasten shifter unit to chassis, making sure the rubber does not get pinched

So no need for an accurate template?

The tray is raised and doesn't sit flush against the chassis so it's hard to measure that way. It is also difficult to insert the tray if the spacer is attached to the shifter, there isn't enough clearance.

I measured the location of the front left shifter spacer rivnut in relation to the tray's left rivnut in the chassis, then transferred those measurements to the new plastic tray to make the cut. The hole in the plastic tray for the spacer could be any shape really, what you have to get right is the cutout in the rubber liner.

1. Remove top center console panel (where the start button is)
2. Remove factory manual tray (3 bolts under the rubber liner)
3. Unbolt shifter unit from spacer.
4. Unbolt spacer from chassis and remove it (front of the spacer is taller than the rear, keep that in mind when reinstalling and templating)
5. Grab new auto plastic tray and cut an opening for the spacer to go through (I used the chassis rivnuts as reference as explained above to estimate where to cut)
6. Cut an opening at the rear of the tray wide enough to allow the shifter arm to go through.
7. Install plastic tray, secure with bolts
8. Install shifter spacer, secure with bolts
9. Add blue tape to top of rubber liner so you can draw on it
10. Insert rubber liner under shifter unit
11. Mark outline to cut, this may be tricky because there is movement to the shifter unit and you can't see the holes to line it up if the liner installed.
12. Take out rubber liner and cut the opening, start small, adjust as needed.
13. Install rubber mat
14. Fasten shifter unit to chassis, making sure the rubber does not get pinched

Honestly, there was a lot of eyeballing, but it came out ok.

are you referencing this? If so, no. That is just the normal mesh panel. If you don't select that option you'll get solid panels

Geez that looks good! Thanks for sharing. Anyway to install it without having to remove the console trim above? Can I just unbolt the shifter from the floor, or is that a no-go? Why does the console trim on top have to be removed?

Thanks! If you don't remove the top you wont be able to lift the shifter assembly enough to slide the new tray in because the cables hit the lower part of the boot delete shroud. It's really easy to remove that trim piece though, it's held by just clips.
