DIY - Oil Change Reference for 2GR-FE

How does this compare

How does this compare to the Penzoil listed above?

Well, it’s currently significantly less 💰.

I’m sure people will say Mobil 1 is inferior, Pennzoil is better, etc.. but Mobil 1 0W-40 is what Porsche recommends for my car anyway, and it’s what I’ve used for years. Whether that’s wrong or right I’ll leave to the oil nerds to make that argument 🤷🏽‍♂️

This is a Toyota engine, so I don’t see why it would need a better engine oil than a Porsche to perform as intended… but hey, that’s just me.

Okay, you win. That's a lot cheaper. I just saw it as one 5qt pack.

Brother, if you’re considering doing your own oil changes you win in my book. Show that car some love!

I’m just trying to help with some options. Choose whatever oil you feel is right for you. I’m not here to dissuade or argue with anyone.

In this case, with a 4 post lift.

You could do it with a set of race ramps or rhino ramps under the rear wheels, but it would be pretty awkward with so many bolts to remove. Do-able though.
I just used regular rhino ramps. The car has plenty of clearance so you don't need low profile ramps. That being said, it was a relatively tight fit under the car.

I also did not see the manual images posted above so I ended up removing the plastic diffuser as well. Honestly was not bad, just time-consuming. Kinda glad I did because it gave me the chance to dump a ton of small rocks that had accumulated up there somehow.

A 4 post lift would make the job super easy IMO.

Thanks KCDarkV. You've answered one of my questions: I see you backed the Emira up onto the Rhino Ramps. One other question: does your driveway slope down from the garage floor, increasing the space under the rear end of the car, or is your driveway level to the garage floor? Appreciate your post with pics and comments.

Walmart usually has the 0W-40 Mobile 1 Euro oil for around $25 per 5 quart jug. I used a lot of it on my various MB cars. I used the Pennzoil for the first oil change on my Emira but I'm sure the Mobile 1 is fine also.

I also backed up to Rhino Ramps, and while it was a tight fit under the car to get the rear tray off, all went well after that.

My driveway is pretty flat leading into the garage. Glad you found the pics helpful!

Drain plug torque always seem excessive to me. It's just a drain hole.

Just wondering: why don't car people safety wire their drain plugs? Is it just not a thing?

Very unusual for one to ever back out if applied with a proper crush washer.

On bikes it's much more common to see (and on track, require) safety wire because the engine is often a stressed member, and the whole bike is being flung in different directions repeatedly creating side-loads through the powertrain, so the stresses being transmitted from part to part can lead to fasteners backing out.

In a road car the powertrain is largely free from any direct loads/stresses other than its own power delivery.

In track specials and formula cars you do see the safety wire though, because of the way some of them are constructed with the engine or gearbox attached directly to chassis structure and sharing loads.

Did my first oil change yesterday, with the kind assistance of @B r I a n

The number of bolts on the bottom of this car is insane. It all goes together quite logically, but wow. I can't imagine the engineering schematics involved in designing all of these precision-fit interlocking pieces.

Bottom access to the engine is great once the undertray is removed. Clear and easy.

Here's the top side of the ducted undertray showing the air management. Very cool design.

do you have the touring mode? Mine is missing the panels for the 2 openings. I have the sport.

No, I have Sport. Very interesting.

Were any of the fasteners there? The 10mm bolts on the outer sides?

I wonder if yours were removed to check something and then not reinstalled ? Seems weird to be a production change.

Very odd, talked to service at my dealership and said it was a tour and sport mode thing, but I think that’s not right.
