I'm out - the cancellations thread

I am out. Got my 7.9.21 deposit back from dealer last month. The final straw was last month the dealer got a production level demo car with a Lotus USA rep to babysit it in the showroom. And even though I had a very early deposit I was just a few short of an FE allocation. The rep did not even put down his Whopper and large fries that he was eating at a tiny cocktail table next to the car to tell "test drives are for FE allocations only".
As to be expected my Porsche rep answered his phone on the first ring...
That is ridiculous treatment, what a way to interact with a customer, deposit or not.

Having been very disappointed by my first test drive in a 'touring' and then much more enthusiastic again after a second test in a 'sport' (which i have ordered), on saturday i called in at Lotus Prestbury to view the DV demo car in the flesh.
This is the colour i have ordered and is the only one I had not yet seen in person.
I am due to be Feb build so expecting the call sometime soon - hence the need to view the colour.
Also had Mrs B with me for moral support.
TBH I would prefer it to be a little more green, but in fact I do like the colour and importantly so did Mrs B.
At this point as was definitely maybe still in.

As we had some time, we took the opportunity to call in elsewhere to view and sit in (but not drive) a Vantage and a 570s.
In conclusion, without driving, Mrs B ranking was 570, Emira, Vantage.
I am probably 570, vantage, Emira
Clearly the 570 would be 4-5 yrs old, vantage 3-4 and Emira new which is a factor.
So now planning to arrange a final test drive of the 570 & vantage asap in the next 2 weeks, then its decisions time.
I urge caution on those drives, particularly the 570s (vantage was underwhelming for me) - the sports series McLaren is an entirely intoxicating experience and a far superior and involving drive compared the even more expensive 720s...the only reason I haven't ditched my Emira order and gone down that road is because I am struggling to justify the extras for the second hand convertible I would definitely want (Emira not offered in said guise unfortunately) and the niggling doubt over big bills regardless of warranties...oh, and the slight matter that actually I think I prefer the even more raw 600LT...so the Emira will be had and enjoyed until I am in a more comfortable position to hold my breath on a McLaren experience)

1. Fries/chips don't taste good when cold. Period. It's like when you are washing your car in the sun (and you know that is a no-no) and going as fast as you can, and your neighbor comes out and wants to chat with you.

2. Demo cars that came to US late last year had test drives scheduled for FE allocations only. That was the expectation otherwise hundreds of non-FE deposit holders would be getting in line also.

Took a vantage out today for a test drive -2019 model. Love it, love it, love it!
struggling to get a 570 test at any main dealer at the moment to compare.
I would say the Emira probably handles better than the vantage but the power, noise and drama of it is immense.
would an R8 or 991 be better? almost certainly yes, but who cares.
Still need to get into the 570 to compare so thats mission critical now.
Do i want a new Emira or a 3-4 yr old vantage? - i think Vantage holds all the cards now!

I felt exactly the same after driving the vantage… lovely car, lots of personality… inside a bit weird design wise, but still a very nice place to be and a really engaging drive.

I then drove the R8. Better performance better handling, and I figure a lower run cost.

The emira has better steering and more feedback than both. I think the R8 is close on handling, and the vantage the worst of the 3

When do you make the decision??!

FWIW - It may vary by dealership. I am an August 31, 2022 (late to the game) Base model depositor and I had no problem signing up and getting a test drive on the demo at GatorMotorsports. In October.

TBH I think i have pretty much decided to pull the plug. Mrs B said I was excited when I got back today and that's how it should be (and that i wasnt excited after either of the 2 Emira tests).
Still want to try a 570 (i did last april but need a refresh) - That's the one i really want! Its just that it would be 2 yrs older at same price point as Vantage and i dont really want to add another £10k to get it one that bit newer.
My biggest issue is that i am still emotionally attached and invested in the Emira but all signs are saying dont do it so i just need to break that attachment.

call me old fashioned, but for 80k+ I want to be wetting myself with excitement! I was literally swearing and grinning the entire R8 drive.

I too found it hard to emotionally detach from my 18 month emira rollercoaster.

Go with your gut feelings.

I went through the same thing. It took me 1-2 months of thinking about it and thinking about it before pulling the plug. I got my refund check last week and cashed it. I just don’t have the patience or understanding to be okay with a brand new, $110K car that is likely to have problems in the first few months of ownership. I might jump back in in a few years. We’ll see.

I was lol during my Emira drive. It was so fun. I agree a big buck purchase should be like new sneakers

I do worry I should be more excited given they're building my car this month... or are they? Very worn down with it all but just feel the need to complete the journey. My current thinking is 6-12mths in the Emira then 570 spider.
There's still a part of me hoping that the excitement kicks in when I actually get it. Most of the current YouTube reviews give me hope.

I’m in the same boat (looking at a 540/570) probably a 570GT, been talking to a couple of McLaren garages and specialists over the past couple of days. I think I’ve largely come to the terms with the fact that I am out. This forum is a great community that I have enjoyed being apart of but I no longer feel any excitement towards the Emira.

Maybe I will revisit it in a couple of years time, but I can afford a Macca now and that might not be true in the future!

I also felt detached at my test drive and overall the excitement had declined over the waiting period. The experience has been truly awful when it should have been the opposite.
The excitement is back on as the 718 Spyder is being delivered on Thursday. Open top motoring with 414BHP and manual box. Roll on Thursday. Let the 2023 start with Silverstone in March and Spa in July.

Nearly a week into ownership and all I can say never in my wildest dreams could I imagine a car being so good. Truly a amazing driving experience.
