Lotus Emira Key?

Would really appreciate if someone can for sure verify that this car will have requirement to push key fob button to open doors. I'll quit sweating my decision and cancel.

It definitely has the ability to push the key fob to lock and unlock the doors. It doesn’t have the ability to walk up to the car with the fob in your pocket and unlock automatically without you using the fob.

That can't be a deciding factor 😆
Like refusing to date that amazing supermodel because she doesn't eat olives (no euphemism implied!)

I was going to ask the same thing. Surely this can’t be the reason to forego a purchase. I guess I could see deferring a purchase until the tech catches up with other cars, or maybe being priced out (ie, the car is not good value in your mind) but key fob functionality, really?

It’s absolutely a deal breaker for me. This will be my daily driver and with all the alternatives out there there is no way I’m going to be rooting around trying to find a key to open my doors.

That literally has not been a thing for 5-10 years.

It’s more like dating a model that wants to pick her nose at dinner every single night . Yah I might overlook it for the first few exciting nights but after that it’s gonna get annoying real fking fast.

Personally don't think it is a deal breaker, both me and partner have cars less than 5 years old and you have to push button on remote to unlock doors, so don't think it is that uncommon really. Fair enough if you had to actually put key in lock and turn it, but not just to do as you do with most other cars....

Where will it end. Human race in pods plugged into the Matrix because we can't face getting out of bed 😉
We all have our pet peeves, so fair enough

I’m amazed it’s a deal breaker. It’s too much effort to put your hand in your pocket to unlock the car? Wow. I thought I was fairly tech savvy, but that seems like a disproportionate reliance on a tech feature. Your choice of course.

Out of interest, what gearbox option are you choosing?

I would say if you've never had a car with it, it sounds like a silly thing, but I keep my keys in my briefcase and never take them out, my wife keeps them in her purse. We literally never touch a key, you just walk to the car and open it and then start it. Once you get used to it, it's like living in a smart home - I don't set my alarm it sets itself as I leave the home, etc. I'm not going backwards in my life. I completely understand why some would find this an absurd reason to ditch a car, but it would totally piss me off every time I had to find my key.

I was initially I4/DCT but had decided V6 manual once I saw the low HP on the turbo 4. Now I'm thinking of going back to the Taycan vs. 911 debate I was doing before.

Totally understand, I do remember a dark day indeed when I once had to get the my own ice for my gin & tonic 😱😁 the horror.

Just kidding mate, your money, your choice. I was down the road on another 911 purchase, I knew exactly what to expect from Porsche, turned out that is what pushed me toward Lotus for the first time!

Time will tell if it’s the first and last.

Good luck with your future car whatever it is.

Thanks. I understand your usage and the convenience of it, just surprised it’s a fundamental deciding factor in rejecting a car. I’ve had cars with it but not become reliant on it because I have old cars too - some of which still need a physical key.

If I can add my “key” to my mobile phone wallet so I don’t have to carry the physical key then that would be more of a benefit for me.

Not trying to provoke an argument and meant very much tongue in cheek - it seems ironic to want a manual car but be unhappy about manually unlocking the car. But hey, it’s entirely your choice of course 👍

Let's hope at least the key fob will be slim and small like MB key fobs.

Another thought, if we keep complaining about it like the green color, maybe Lotus will all of a sudden realize they made a mistake with the info and that proximity unlock is included after all.

Every car I own, 8 in total right now, has a physical key. Both my wife and son have cars with push button start and engine management systems that stop the car when idling at an intersection. Honestly, I’m not a fan of either one, and particularly not the latter. Every time I hear the engine fire back up I just cringe. And I like turning a key. It connects me to the car, kind of like shaking hands to say hi. Have any of you ever watched Star Trek TNG? There is an episode where the enterprise responds to a distress call from a planet in chaos because they can’t meet their basic needs. Turns out that generations ago their people developed a device they called the overseer that could read their minds to provide any material needs they wished. No one in the present remembered that the overseer was an invention…a thing. Instead it took on the identity of a god, whose benevolence was responsible for not just their wellness, but their very survival. And then the overseer broke. I know it’s extreme, but sound familiar? We are on this same path in so many ways. Not to be apocalyptic, but I fear for a world so lacking in self reliance and instead so completely reliant on technology that few understand (me included, and I have two doctorates).

I think it's just a matter of adjusting to a new habit.

I have keyless entry in my current vehicle too and it is a convenience, to be sure, but it's also bit of smoke n mirrors. After all, I still need to make sure I have the key on my physical person (in my pocket, bag, etc) before I leave the house. This won't change in the Emira. Right now I still need to touch something to unlock the car door (the handle), even with the keyless entry. That means I need a free hand still to actually open the car. With the Emira, I'll simply have to use that same free hand to quickly press a button in my pocket before opening the door.

Really, a negligible difference at the end of the day and one you will quickly get used to.

Well, at almost $100k, I would expect a passive keyless entry. Com’n. I hate it when they cheap out on things that are virtually common to all cars. Now, I’m not nixing my order. I can’t wait to get my hands on my Emira, but it also is not my daily driver, so unlocking with buttons is ok with me. It just looks bad when you have to do it in public 🤪. Both of our cars are newer and have keyless entry, although I still have to mess with my key on my car every now and then. Again, it is a small issue to me, but also annoying.
