A warning for those in the UK thinking of delaying until March 23

Having had the Lotus addiction for nearly fifty years now, I have learnt to be patient, disappointed, ecstatic and at times angry.
I agree that CS needs urgent reform, but that aside most of the delays seem to be down to third party supply of parts. I for one are happy to wait as long as necessary for my Emira as I have experienced how Mr Chapman would have solved this problem, it would have been by using parts that either weren’t quite suitable and/or would lead to future problems, I am not knocking him for this as his situation was very different to where Lotus are now, but that is why I am happy to wait for a car that is hopefully correct in every way.

There is a seachange going on at Lotus and there will of course be hiccups along the way, I am happy to cut them some slack, they have offered me the opportunity to buy what will probably be the best all rounder they have produced to date and also the last ICE model. Yes, It’s a little overweight and imo has a few too many gadgets, but at my time of life it ticks my boxes, plus I have an Elise tucked away for those days that I can manage to get in it.
The problems at Lotus will be overcome over the next few months and eventually, in a few years Emira production will stop, we will then have no choice but EV’s so I am going to savor these last few years of ICE and appreciate, what I believe, Lotus have tried to do, giving us a great car at a very fair price. Hopefully it is the Swansong that is fitting for Lotus (ICE) and it’s loyal customer/enthusiast base

Yeah but this isn't their last car and then it's doors closed. This is supposed to be the beginning of the 'new' Lotus leading into their electric era. If there's one thing the new electric era is going to be associated with (for everybody, not just Lotus), it's social media. Lotus needs to get with the program and realize their electric vehicle era customers are going to expect that. They should be using the Emira launch as the testbed for rolling that out now.

There's a 13 year old girl on YouTube who posts videos of her just playing her violin in the street for people. She started doing this when she was 9, and she now has 7.53 MILLION subscribers! She generally posts a video once a week, and they're fun to watch. She's gotten to be quite good and dances while she plays.

Here's her latest video she just posted 2 days ago, and it already has over 1 million views:

If a 13 year old girl can do this, c'mon Lotus! Social media is where it's at now. It's replaced the formerly mainstream press as the source people go to for news and entertainment. There's SO MUCH you can do in this space Lotus, and you NEED to get into this. This is what people want and expect. She and her generation are your future customer base. WAKE UP!
Their Board need a wake up (shake up)
They have already purposely shunned all of the existing beardy customer base, but are doing nothing to engage with a younger one #getyourribbondancersout

I think it is fair to say the customer base is changing, the £20K elise is where most owners are, and that really wont overlap with the new model range. For Emira, all they have to do is treat customers (particularly new customers) with less distrain than a Porsche dealership - which is a fairly low bar

My Porsche dealer wants me to take the emira over when I get it!

What we’re forgetting is Lotus will sell every single Emira they build. Why should they bother making me feel good during my wait?
I personally am not forgetting that at all. Why should/would they? .... IMO because its human nature, you would think, to want to make others feel good if you can and it costs you nothing, doesn't that in turn make you feel good also? If I am working at starbucks and someone places an order, I take their money, ALL of it, not just a deposit, I can now treat them like an arse, or I can be kind and polite and even friendly. The idea being to create a nice atmosphere, relationship, albeit short lived, but I want them to come back so I treat them well, I want them to enjoy the experience and I want to do my job to the best of my ability and my job goes beyond just taking the money and asking them what they want.
Besides this... its sensible and its the most basic marketing course you could do, "purchase reinforcement". You dont need an MBA to know how to treat customers. The problem is Lotus has grown, employed quite a few people over the last few years, some have come and gone already, but IMHO, there is no one grabbing the company by the xxxxxx and cementing things together, it feels very VERY wishy washy to me. It seems to be an each for themselves approach and that will never work long term. The media guy who was here, although I never saw him or the introduction, I doubt would know anything other than the bear minimum. He certainly wont know about parts or production, this would be my guess, so I doubt he could help us even if he felt inclined or given permission to, which I am sure he doesnt have. I just don't get the impression Lotus is a flat structured and well oiled......... engine. Its a dry sump to me.
Yes they have produced a good car, which was not that hard if we are honest, as they had a very good basis in the Evora, which many of you love. It needed tweaking, updating, modernising inside and out. As Ive stated, I think the outside has been modernised much better than the inside though; I am yet to be convinced by the quality of Linkedin's (yes i know) screens and menu system, or the speakers, which by name should be great, but at least one other person and myself have heard them and they so far don't live up to the hype....anyway, off track (which being wider I think will be noticeable for handling ;)).
Not engaging with your customers can have drastic consequences, and the fact the cars are sold out for 60 odd weeks will mean absolutely nothing if the car gets panned by its new owners, 2 of which are relatively huge youtubers. Or if a part fails regularly and they dont have stock, which clearly they wont, it doesnt take much to go off the rails.
Ariel, not comparable in size of course, are generally sold out for 12-18-24 months also, but if Top Gear slated their car or a good few customers got together, as we can on here very easily, created some traction due to the cars being below par or as I said, a specific part failing and having to wait to get it replaced, resale values fall drastically, like a parachute made of iron ore, and those order books, well they soon empty just as quick as they filled.
Why didnt the Alpine make it? A "great" car. One of the TOP GEAR guys, Mr. May, thinks its just about the best sports car out there, for none silly money. I dont think you will find a bad review? In the end.... not a success and has never sold in large numbers and yes they had hopes for quite a large production. Before Covid there were generally about 10 - 12 for sale on Autotrader and they were not quick to sell.
I dont wish any of this on Lotus, but I do wish someone would get hold of this company and push it along, give it a good shake up, a good kick up the backside. I strongly disagree with the "if you have nothing to tell them / to say, then dont say anything." Im not your wife of 25 years, Im your.. better change this... Im your husband of a few months and I want to hear all your crap, even if it means nothing and does not further my knowledge, I still want to hear from you.

This has been said many times and I think the vast majority on here want some contact, even if the contact is not 100% specific or guaranteeing anything, but I want to feel important to Lotus and I dont think any of us do, quite the opposite in fact and thats a shame. They dont even need to mention dates in their damn emails, they just need to say whats going on, how dissapointed they are, what steps they may be taking and what they are maybe doing in the mean time, working on the GT3, looking for more dealers here there whereever, it doesnt matter, just engaging with us. Giving us some exclusive footage, how much to make a decent you tube video, sending it to us before releasing it online... whatever, this is childrens play and they cant play, they are old men with out any imagination.
Sorry, this was not aimed at you or anyone on here... but at Lotus. Focus groups... I dont think thats something Lotus has an interest in.... just like us 😭

Is lotus really treating you like an ass? Don’t be a Karen yo

My Porsche dealer wants me to take the emira over when I get it!
does he have some paint stripper he wants to test out.... 😂

yes I think my one would like to see the car too, he was impressed with my honda E.... as was I, while I had it :)

Is lotus really treating you like an ass? Don’t be a Karen yo
Lotus is treating me and everyone on here like an ass, yes, 100%.... are you kidding... of course they are.
Lets get this straight, I was confirmed, via email and via phone, my car would be built in June back in what, April? Before that I was expecting it in the Spring... but that was never confirmed, so no problem.
June came and went, July came and went too.... I personally received no communication from Lotus at all (I never got the video as Lotus deleted me from their mailing list), until I called them in August, only then do I find out (from them, as I knew on here) the situation and then get an official email last week, 2 months after my car was meant to be built...without any word to the contrary.
this is very much treating me and others like xxxx
Anyway, its not about the car being late, its about their misinformation and inconsistent info from the very same department. I speak to CS and I am told there is a frther delay to all cars of another 4 weeks. Someone else calls the same day and is told there car is still on schedule... when its not.
Its about so many things, the promise of photos for 6 months to help people choosing a colour, its about changing some of the specs promised without actually informing us, HP for example, seat styles, ... its about the website still giving incorrect info (spring delivery). Unrelated to me, but giving none production cars to the press, who has ever done that??? So many things that have been a let down....
If you are happy with them, I am happy for you. I dont know about anyone else's expectations, but I would never treat my customers like this as I would have been out of business a long time before I was out of business ;). I repeat, this is not a professional company in its approach to dealing with its customers. It is moving away from dealers, but it is NOT ready to do this role itself, that is 100% clear...
Anyway, its bed time here...

The world is burning, you know this. Lotus has no info for you, cause the world is burning. If you can predict anything supply wise thru the next quarter, then you’d be the only one.

your missing the point....
its not about telling me when my car will be ready, I have never said they or I or you can do this did I? I simply, in a not so simple way, said they need to speak to their customers, even if they dont have specifics.... make us feel special. If silence makes you feel special, hearing nothing, being left out in the cold, thats fine, I dont think its a good approach for a long lasting business, or indeed any relationship though....

TL-DR (I think that on 95% of your posts 😆) Your short posts are the best ones.

Always glad to have the voice from someone that has owned Lotus cars for such a long time. The experience is always appreciated.

The reputation of Lotus was one of brilliant driving machine's but poor reliability, hard to service (lack of dealers), and questionable CS. I am hoping the reliability part is fixed. The rest I can say is not. If we want to know how successful Lotus management is at releasing an all new vehicle, look at the Eletre. I will wager a guess that the Emira will outsell the Eletre 2 to 1 in North America. The largest SUV market in the world. No other brand's sports car has out sold it's SUV...(including Porsche, Lambo, and now Aston Martin) Mark my words Lotus will be the first. A true testament to their marketing management.

When you get your car, looking back , you will find out that the process of waiting is thrilling. The happiest time of owning something that you really love is the time of expecting it. ;)

I was just about to say "winner" but the SUV remark got me and in the end confused me. I am not sure what sold out can refer to as that would be more for the tins of soup already on the shelves, not something thats yet to be made and has a waiting list, but I get your drift of course. But is it possible the SUV's of these high end companies have sold well elsewhere and not in the US???

The SUV's have given a new financial freedom to all of the companies you mention, and ASton would probably be out of business without it, mainly due to years of underinvestment and poor decisions. Porsche started that with the Cayenne, albeit the Macan now sells far more than its larger uglier brother, but the brother came first of ALL and has done very very well for them. The Urus is a complete success, and I quote:
Urus Becomes Lamborghini's Best-selling Model in the Shortest Time Ever. Automobili Lamborghini adds a new record to its list with its Super SUV Urus, as the best-selling model in the shortest time ever. Since its market debut in 2018, 20,000 units have been produced, setting sales records year on year.

I dont know the US numbers, but I would be amazed if it isnt doing proportionally as well in the US if not better than elsewhere. To think they are selling in the sorts of numbers the Emira wants to sell, but it costs 3 or 4 times as much.
Aston has also done very well with their big car:
Aston Martin Lagonda has reported higher than expected revenues for the first four months of 2021, with sales boosted by the success of the Aston Martin DBX SUV. The British company sold 1353 cars in the first quarter of the year, including 746 DBXs – 55% of all sales.

Again, Id be sure a lot of those are US sales.
Hence, while I agree with everything else you said, I am not sure re the SUV
Actually now I re-read your post and I am confused... you say the Emira will outsell the Eletre 2:1 in the US, but then say Lotus will "sell out" the Eletre in the US and will be the first to do so? "Mark my words Lotus will be the first."
I wont say more as I am not sure, as normal, what I am talking about, but this time its partly your fault ;).

When you get your car, looking back , you will find out that the process of waiting is thrilling. The happiest time of owning something that you really love is the time of expecting it. ;)
I agree thats the way it should be, but I can sincerely say with this experience, it wont be that way for me.... I have waited far longer for other cars and it has been wonderful in many ways and I have waited for round the world trips and buying a multi million pound yacht (I may exaggerate in my posts), and usually the waiting is as good as the receiving, but no, Lotus have really taken the waiting and made it into purgatory .

as @NicolasB doesn’t t read my posts of more than 8 or 9 lines 😘, I split that earlier one, here is the rest.. off topic, but on topic of your topic ...
I am totally unsure about the Eletre myself, I ordered one initially, as did others, partly due to the price/numbers/Lotus factor, and for me the interior looks great, although not exactly dog friendly with it probably having the smallest boot of any 5m long car I've seen, terrible packaging if you want really use the SUV as anything other than a mid size car, which is what most people use their SUV's as anyway.
Then I cancelled, as Lotus have been a disappointment so far to me with the Emira and we all know the reasons, but we all know the internals of the company are not in line. Also they are releasing the car with a certain set of potential numbers that I simply dont trust based on what I have also seen so far with the Emira, for what ever reason. I dont remember Porsche ever releasing a car with a set of potential / target numbers / criteria that they failed to make reality> normally bettering them. In fact, I'd say they generally dont release much in the way of numbers so soon at all, which would be far more sensible than trying to grab early headlines, but I could be wrong.
Finally I have now seen the car in person and it, in many ways like the Exige, looks like two different cars joined together, I think the back has little to do with the front (which looks great in comparison)>. The back however, reminds me personally way too much of the Kia EV6 and even the side doesnt look special to me at all. I am not an SUV type customer in general, but the URUS suits its maker and their design lines are clear all round, its the same car.
